Dodgy new members

Post by Larry »

Is it just me, or do a lot of the new members on this forum in the members list seem to be selling porn, viagra, Britney Spears nude/bald photos etc. and have no interest in Stage 1's.

I am a new member however, and I do have a Stage 1! You can't buy any dodgy Pharmaceuticals from me.

How many members are actually genuine Stage 1 owners/enthusiasts ?

Larry,

We get that all the time, ocasionally there is a clear out and a lot of these accounts are deleted.

They do it to try and get links their sites spread as far across the internet as possible.

Some times they post messages which usually get deleted asap.

IIRC we have over 100 genuine members on here.

I carry out a mass deletion of the spammers every few days or so when I get
around to it.

They get as far as being on the member list but can't actually post messages
unless I authorise them (I used to have it set for self-authorisation by email
but some of them were getting through and posting messages).

I think it's mostly done by scripts. I have banned certain email addresses but
it's difficult to avoid potentially banning legitimate subscribers.

According to the database there are 94 users who have posted at least one
message and a total of 171 who are authorised to post.

The internet seems to be wonderful place if you're selling something dodgy or trying to advertise something.

It does annoy me that they target forums such as this. and target my PC with Spyware, Malware, viruses etc.

Keep up the good work Admins. I'm sure its an uphill struggle at times. But worth it!

I had a small forum once, same problem there.

Can you not have a key confirmation registration, or something?

Hello,

I think this is a great site, and it will remain a great side. The administrator and the moderator do a good job. Those dodgy members should be ignored
and deleted.
In my opinion one can not avoid any dodgy members apearing on this site, but if nobody takes realy notice of them, it`s not serious. All members who are realy interested in Stage Ones or V8 or so can still send posts from each to the other, get help give help and have fun.

I don’t wish to be harsh,(this is where i am going to be, .... sorry)
Macs are delightful machines and in some aspects more intuitive, cooler and desirable than PC's .

However Macs are just as susceptible to viruses, spyware and malicious software as any other computing platform, be it Linux, PC, BSD, Novel or Unix.

Ive been fortunated to hang out with some very talented chums in my career in computer games, who have helped me sort my machines over the years as well as going to future tech demos etc
I’ve seen Macs hacked in seconds, with the appropriate tools its simple and easily automated via the net.

As an experiment on channel five last year a PC was left without safegaurds connected to the net via broadband. It lasted 25 minutes.
I recall reading this year the same experiment lasted 11 minutes.

I have now been on the recieving end of hackers  and had a machine killed by them  .
I have since been able to save 1 Macs and 4 PCs (1 pc in my own office network and the others belonging to various friends) all which have been zombied (Taken over by hackers) of which ironically the Macs was the most difficult as the owner was under the impression he was immune to such things

The reason Macs are not generally targeted is because Microsoft is seen as the big evil corporate monster.
Being the market leader there are many more PCs and therfore much more opportunity to jump PCs.
Ignorance of the tech is also a problem. Do a wireless network scan and see how many are unencripted networks
I can log onto and gain acces to any of 3 near me. I bet you find one!

Please don’t be blinded into believing you are safe

I pass on the mantra I was given

Get a virus checker (I would recommend Eset NOD 32 for PC I dont know about Mac)
Get a software firewall and bloke all your ports
Get a router with a built in Network address translator (NAT Firewall) which will make you anonymous to the Net - very important
Get a Adware program Lavasoft Ad-Aware is good

Enjoy your Tech which ever platform you run and keep your investment and data safe.

Regards

Ginga

P.S Thanks to the Moderators. You have my utmost respect and gratitude for running such a supremly delightful forum. You guys allow me and others access to knowledge and community that would otherwise be impossible.
Theres always a way !

I'd add to the list. "Spybot" is excellent software to use in conjunction with Ad-Aware. The first time I ran these after I was made aware of bots and malware etc. I found my PC infected with 250 such things. A colleague who spent most of the day trawling the net had well over a 1000!
