starting problems when hot

Post by martin hughes »

Can anybody shed light on the following problem?
Stage one V8 with LPG and electronic ignition starts from cold and warm on either fuel ok.
If the engine is very hot (ie on a long run/hot day)if shut down or it stalls it will not start on either fuel.
Once left for 30 or so minutes it will start ok.

Suspect some sort of flooding?

Many thanks,

Martin Hughes.

Hmmm... Ive seen what you say happen, but not experienced it first hand, and i have no idea what causes it, only he started up fine on petrol.

However, i have the same problem when COLD, if i stall it getting out of the garage, (its a very steep ramp up) then it will not go again on either fuel. I suspect damp, but the strange thing is i dont have a problem on the first start, only the second, and even then it only fires on a few cylinders on petrol. :?

Does it have the Lucas electronic ignition, with the coil mounted on top of the amplifier? These are well known for failing when hot.

Hi Martin,
Next time it happens try pulling one of the leads off and popping a spare spark plug in and earth it's body against the engine (use insulated pliers to hold it!!!) get someone to crank the engine and check if you have a spark or not. It wont solve your problem but at least it will give you and idea of if your problem really is ignition related. Check the condition of the spark also if it's small and yellowish it may not be enough to detonate, and really needs to be a bluish spark with an audible crack
if your systems in good condition.

Checked the spark today whilst the fault was on, it was a audible click and a blue spark althrough it was not quite as strong as i expected, problem is i can't check the spark whilst its running.
I will change all 8 plugs and have sent for a set of leads.

Any more ideas in the mean time would be great

Hi Martin,
You could also check the condition of the spark when the engine is cold (when it will start okay) if you cant detect a diffrence between the two then the problem may not be ignition related. also dont forget the dizzy cap if you are renewing the ignition components.
