Should there be any closing panels down to the dash tray. The aux panels themselves stop level with the top edge of the bottom dash, but that leaves space bellow the, for the wires to hand about looking messy.

My millitary S3 has closing panels there, but the parts book suggests is just open on a normal S3

Look at my photo in your earlier thread entitled Auxiliary panel - no room for any extra panels on mine.

And these the closing pannels on my MOD S3

The holes in my stage 1 pannel appear to eb about where the closing pannes are fastened, just they done seem to exist in any of the parts lists

The difference is that on both mine there is a moulded plastic dome-like cover over the auxiliary gauges, which I can't see present in your photos, and the auxiliary panel is designed to fit over this.

He, that would make the gap smaller.
I'm thinking maybe the closing panels were used when the auxiliary dash was fitted, without any gauges in the dash bottom.
Well cast the new wider in normal S3 circles see what people have there I think, as this bit won't be stage 1 specific

There's no closing panels on mine although I do have a rubber strip either side that stops you from cutting yourself on the sharp edge. Whether that is original or not remains to be seen but see no evidence to suggest the latter. When I did my upgrade the wires were tidied in such a way that nothing shows or hangs through the gap.

Digging has revealed the closing panels were a military thing, might still fit some tough to tidy it up
