Stuck in 1st.

Post by ProofNZ »

Morning guys - another day, another challenge.

While in the process of replacing my Master Clutch Cylinder recently, the 1 developed another problem - it won't come out of first.

I had to start it up in first a couple of times to move it around, and now, the clutch disengages the drive, the hi/lo ratio works, but I can't seem to get it out of first.

Playing with the gearstick (right hand drive) - I get some movement to the left and 'feel' something move - but nothing to the right or back or forward.

Before I start pulling the entire gearbox to pieces - anything I should be checking/looking for?

Thanks.

Also, we noticed (much to our surprise) that the plate that holds the gear shaft down into the housing is loose, but about 1cm.

Looking at the parts list, it seems that it is missing the ring/washer/seal that goes on top of the ball, below the metal plate with the 3 bolts.

Why? Who knows. There isn't the possibility it's dropped down into the gearbox is there? I am guessing its some form of teflon/hard plastic 'grommit'...

I think you may be on to your solution.

also check the dedent springs and balls. I have read that if they get too dirty or out of adjustment then they can hang up the shifting mechanism.

Looking at the parts list - I can't see a part number?

Is this a rubber or metal part normally?

Part number is 622387.
It is a white rubbery washer.
Just had to fit one to mine as they harden up with age and break up.

So, I can only assume that the old one is now sitting in the gearbox.

Is this something that I can address without pulling the entire gearbox out? I am just weighing up it being something I can do over the weekend, verses sending it down to the local mechanics to pull to bits do.

My main concern is that I don't really have the lifting equipment, or knowledge if this gets too involved.

Have read through the manual, but really looking for something (and article) with some decent pictures in it as well...

Still doesn't change the fact I can't get it out of first though.

I do also realise it might not be the issue - in fact, I do find it hard to believe it would be enough to jam something.

BAH!

Also - which is what started this episode - still loosing clutch fluid.

Replaced the master, secondary to dry as far as I can tell - but I swear the fluid is tracking down onto the sump.

I am guessing it could be the seals on the gearbox itself?

I will be pulling the gearbox apart to try and find out why it is stuck in first - I am guessing we will be replacing all the seals when we do that?

pull the slave cylinder out of the bellhousing and have a look, it could be leaking where you can't see it. my one failed without any prior warning at all
