Galvanised chassis

Post by nrv1 »

I am having a new Richards chassis delivered next week.I want to paint it black prior to replacing my existing chassis.
Having read though various threads on the net I am still a little confused about :
1 the best way to treat the galvanised chassis prior to painting
2 the best product to use for painting it.I am thinking of Richards chassis black
Anyone have any strong views based on practical experience?
Any guidance greatfully received
Cheers

What are your precise expectations? As there is NO guaranteed method.

The most effective way is to take it straight around to the local powder coaters. As this is the industrial method for double coating. However as soon as it is undermined it will start to come away in sheets. Water trapped between the layers and ignored, doesn't do much for the galv.

Any other method will involve some form of etch primer which in most cases will not be black. So at some stage when the black colour coat peels away you will have galv and white primer showing.

The only other method is with one of the cheaper enamel paints. Brushed on will do and just be prepared to continually touch up as required.

from what I have seen on other forums (and this is only second hand info)

Use an etching wash such as Mordant T wash to etch the galve, then paint as normal

That is what MetalReady does.
