LT95 selecting first or second gear is difficult.

Post by vijnt »

All, I have a problem with my gearbox.
Whit no engine running it does not shift to first gear. Sometimes it does but sometimes it does not. I can use second gear but shifting back from 3 to 2 is also almost impossible. Only works with very low speeds.

Any toughts. It this easily fixed. Excusse me but I am not an expert mechanic. Do have common sense.

Thanks

you say with no engine running,
how does it shift with the engine running and driving?

Almost any gear box will baulk with no internal motion.

If you have a problem with the engine running, have you compared this to, or driven any other LT95 equipped vehicle? As the shift is generally gummy (resistant to selection) unless the revs are perfect.

I do not work while the engine is running also.
By difficult I actually meant impossible. At times anyway.
Sometime is does work however. I do no a lot about gearboxes but is seams to me it is not how it should be.

OK.

Is the clutch fluid level correct?

Are there external leaks at the clutch master cylinder? (where pedal joins cylinder)

Are there external leaks at the clutch slave cylinder? (where slave joins push rod)

Does the gearbox have the correct type and quantity of oil in it?

I suggest you refer to your owners handbook, parts list and shop manual to assist with the above.

What my plans are for now are

1) master and slave where changed approx 6 months ago.
I want to the air once more. You never know

2) Change the gear oil. not sure wat is in. I am going to use engine oil
50/20

Hope this helps. Altough I suspect worse.

Has the problem been there since you changed the hydraulics? Or was it there before?

Did you adjust the clutch pedal as per the workshop manual?

Dou you think that matters?

Well as you have to upset the previous settings to change the Master Cylinder and as this is notorious fault for owners getting wrong and as you have a gear selection problem, I would be checking it.

Just scanned through this one, have you tried double de-clutching up and down the box? this can often help and was standard procedure for the older standard series 3s in the Army.

Unlike most series box versions, LT95 has full synchro. While it is `good form' to double the clutch changing from 1st to 2nd, it is not always necessary.

I have tried dubbel clutching. does not improve.
Did change the gearoil today. This is a slight improvement.
Next step is de airing the hydrolix and check the pedal settings.

Still feels like something is amiss with the forks or something.
For example.
When I can shift it to gear 1. It wont go in 2.
If it does not go in 1 it will go it 2.
from3 to 2 does not work or very hard. No crunching of gear but it requires a lot of force.

OK. With that description other things become more obvious.

The easy check is to make certain the clutch is working correctly, however from your description is sounds more likely to be the synchro parts themselves that are sticking or worn or the selector forks are worn. Either way I think you will have to drop the gearbox out if the work on the clutch fails to improve the situation.
