109 V8 Salisbury Rear Axle Serial Number Location

Post by Pageant Blue 109 V8 »

As subject.

Cleaned up all around the axle breather, top, front and rear of axle tube - not a thing, just rust. I would expect to see the remains of even one digit.

Were the serial numbers stamped elsewhere?

Rear axle serial number should give some indication of the build sequence and quantities of the 109 V8's.

Gearboxes should also be a tell-tale, but are more subject to being swopped out.

Why would it do that?

Using the parts book as a guide, axle assemblies (by suffix) are fairly generic.

According to your theory axles weren't;

- built on a totally different assembly line in batches,
- then placed into bulk stock,
- then allocated to either parts or assembly line stock and taken from bulk on a first come basis,
- therefore placing no reference on serial number or suffix other than for identification, or possibly the total qty. of axle assemblies built under that suffix,
- thus defeating the practise applied to every other part made by BL.

The number may be on the rear face above the springs seat, have seen it there on rover axles before (though much older)
