v8 Su's

Post by sebking »

I'm about to order a new pair of SU's for my V8 Stage 1 - these carbs ETC1722 and 1723 were fitted to Defenders and available as an upgrade for the the strombergs originally fitted to the Stage1 and RR's. Now making this assumption I shouldn't have a problem but I'm concerned about the Vacuum advance.

The SU's I have may or may not be LR or who knows what but the right hand side has a take off for the vacuum advance. Can't find anything anywhere that tells me if the ETC 1723/22 has one or any helpful pictures.

If not where does it take off from?

1. So you have some kind of factory Land-Rover documentation stating SUs were a Land-Rover approved "upgrade" to any and all 109 V8s? No need to change jets or needles or emission control... just bolt on and run...

I'd really like to see a copy.

2. As you have already stated a specific model of Land-Rover these new carbs are intended for, wouldn't the simplest option be to read the workshop manual for that model and see what they recommend for the take off? Especially as you would need to know the tuning specs of the engine they were intended for...

3. First you state you have these correct "upgrade" carbs then you suggest the carbs you have could be off anything. Which is it?

4. Your issue will always be whether you are using manifold or ported vacuum (before or after the throttle disc). If these are in fact some mystical secret Masonic Land-Rover upgrade, I would strongly suspect that the normal LH nipple is already in place (or RH or possibly both). Especially if these are in fact new carbs and not old stock. As there has been a lot of standardisation to new SU production methods. Alternately, if you have the SU part numbers you can look up their specifications through other sources.

5. What I would suggest you have, or are about to purchase, is an old stock pair of SU carbs for a later model Land-Rover. A later vehicle with completely different tuning and running characteristics to your vehicle. Carbs that will come with some but not all of the required SU linkages to fit the Land-Rover installation. Late model SUs which do not have a fraction of the tuning potential of the earlier models. To replace extremely reliable Solex/Strombergs that actually perform better in off road situations than SUs and are Land-Rover documented as such.

6. The actual, true, all round performance upgrade is to fit (preferably new) 175 CDs of the earlier design with adjustable jets. So you have the same starting point as recommended by Land-Rover for your car and then have greater adjustment and tuning range than the factory fit for 109 V8s.

I'm asking a question here as I've dug around a lot of manuals and the descriptions and pix are not so helpful. Again I have the P/Ns but the spec is very vague on the take off.

To clarify what I though was clear I have a current set of SU's origin unknown, and want to but a new set, I want to make sure the new set has the take off for a vac advance. Needles and springs in the kit are rhe same p/ns as those used on the defender v8.

The kit was used as is on defender V8's, Disco and RR and available as an upgrade for earlier models. It's supplied correct with the right needles etc for the 3.5 v8 complete.

Lots of info on the web re part no FZX3010.

Anyway a call to Burlen confirms that the vac is on the right hand carb.
