Hmmm,
I guess we always have to learn something the hard way. Your original engine doesn’t look too bad. My advice would be to determine what is actually wrong with it. Does it run at all? Your carbs are almost certainly the reason for the poor running so I would suggest finding a set of known good ones and fit them. You’ve got to find out what the knocking is before you write off your engine. If you can, get the oil pressure checked – if it won’t run then you should be able get an idea by just spinning it over on the starter motor. Remove the plugs if you need to up the rpm.
The replacement engine is only good for spares or reconditioning at best so I would see what the garage have to say if they want to preserve their reputation. Sold as seen is one thing but selling you a pup when they could have easily removed the rocker covers for some insight wouldn’t have been rocket science, even for them. You would expect a 4x4 specialist to know better. I appreciate that it is not an accurate guide but the picture of the engine in the back of the 88” don’t give off a well looked after impression!!!
We’re here to offer help and support so post as much as you need to which will help you through this. Don’t get despondent as it will be worth while in the end.

evening all
another update: removed the induction manifold and had a look at the vally. thick gunk same as the rockers.
also had a look at the pistons in the su carbs - they looked like burn marks and one of the needles had damage on it.
took the covers and piston plus photos back to the garage to show them - going to take the engine back this weekend and give me my money back.
now back to beginning with no replacement engine.
would be really great to re-build the engine but a lack of space is the main problem. oh well....

engine
That spare engine I had under the bench needs pushrods that I have and rockers installing. is super clean inside and was sold as running.
Think it was £150 quid - if you want it and if it runs you can pay that for it if you are happy - from a RR?
Just let me know.

hi Seb - interested in your engine please
l cannot remember all the details of your spare engine - is it all complete minus the push rods and rockers. ie carbs (su/strom)? are rockers required?
what will be required to complete the engine and have it running again?
minium oil and filter change
thanks

You should be able to transfer the rockers over from your one or any other bits in fact.
These might be worth a punt even if only for spare parts to make up a good set.

He also has an old RRC engine for a £100 but it’s been sitting around!
I would take a chance with Seb’s engine, at least its been stored well.
Good luck…

thats the plan, my origianl rockers do not look too bad so am hoping that they might be ok.
l have seen those carbs in the e-bay link - handy as they are in warwick and only a 5min drive.
l have learnt that if a engine has stood for quite a while and sold as spare or repairs - its going to need a re-build. even if it turns over ok. they wont be happy with me turning up and removing the rockers and carbs to look inside - will be "sold as seen mate"
Sebs engine was well stored so am hoping to get that off him - just waiting for a reply from him so it can go in this weekend hopefully.

evening all
New engine was fitted over the weekend. wasted most of saturday trying to get old exhgaust pipe y section off and to fit new tubular manifolds - as time ran out l had to put the original standard manifolds back on
couldnt have done all the works without the help of my dad (the best) my mate whose's house the car lives at and Sebking for supplying the new engine and letting me borrow his engine crane - Thank you all
the new valley - as it should look - removed the 17th push rod!!!
broken middle finger didnt help matters - broken during a hockey match + two twisted ankles
anyways - jobs to complete now....
clean and check of manifold and su carbs and install
connect pipework
oil change and related electrical works
check of rocker shafts and gubbins
replace distributer with relevant timing and wiring works
radiator and plumbing works
alternator and wiring works
fair bit to do but with some hours work we should have a running truck again and a MOT

hi
bit of a update on progress.
for the last few months l have been training for a Ironman Triathlon (24th July-Race Day) so all my time has been taken up with training. I am raising sponsorship for the Alzheimers Society - PLEASE check out my web-spage. http://www.justgiving.com/Richard-Stanway

the new slave and master cylinders for the clutch has been fitted and awaits a bleed up.
struggling to remove the distributer.
Front pannel and Rad waiting to be fitted once oil pump is primed and new refielf spring installed,
l have a week off work to recover once the race is done so should have everything bolted back on and good to go!!
