High HC's

Post by sebking »

I'm running 2.5 CO but 2600 ppm on the HCs!

Pulling the plugs show soot on 2 and 5.

Down on power too.

Looking on the ignition and timing side first but hoping that (in the snowy weather) it's not the end of the cam!

Ideas?

Two non firing cylinders will definitely inflate the HC’s. Interestingly those cylinders are supplied by the same carb. How sooty are 3 & 8? Never rule out the cam however, but I guess you would have some tappeting especially if you have two lobes out. Perhaps whip off the rocker covers and see if the offending rockers are travelling the same as the others.

With this extreme cold weather mine was running ok but tickover and low down power was rubbish. Had a play at the weekend and was astonished how much I was required to adjust the mixture to smooth things out. Backed off the timing as well and it is now dead smooth and has no flat spot. I also cable tied a tea towel to the grill to slow the air flow as it was over cooling.

Good luck M…

There's a some knocking coming from the direction of cyl 2. Seems to have arrived with the cold weather and shortly after some ignition trouble with "new" parts...

Cam giveaways I have seen are, down on power (takes along time) and ticking,

I would rule out ignition and Carb first before stipping it down

I have all I need to swap in a new cam on the shelf (chain, cogs cam followers etc etc but need a day to put it in and a day I don't have. Also don't want to be off the road having made some nasty discovery in this weather either.

Weekends are so busy with life in general so that's tricky and prob a day off work.

Little 'in (aged eight) also really wants to help so thinking of telling school he's going to take a day off to do a Cam swap which is very educational in my view...!

Not happy with the plug leads at the moment - a set in the post...

Got all the bits from Rimmers (no britpart bits in the box!) Cam, all gaskets incl composite valley one, timing gears and chain, new hydraulic tappets etc was £135 inc vat delivered! They've got a sale on SD1 parts at the moment and the only different bit is the water pump gasket (I have an SD1 lump anyway)

Worth a look

I've got a double garage...

Why not pop down south and we can put em side by side and race each other (or help each other!) to get em sorted!

Thanks Seb, I have a spair V8 as well its in the disco! thats out of action at the moment with a failed petrol pump and oil consumption issues...

I as not very clear I am looking to go to Magnecor Blue leads, made a huge differnace to the disco (its also a huge amout of work as you have to take the inlet manafold of to get to the coil packs!) I have an issue with damp starting and very wet running... There is a small tick but going to try an engine flush oil and a service first its pulling well at the moment its got RR gearing in the box and still needs a 5th gear!

I did the cam on the disco 3 years ago got all the bits from rimmers, very good even got a good price on a gen LR cam for it, its alot of work in the disco with all the pumps and LPG as well took me 3 weekends working with no power in a pub car park! did the heads as well, had to take the inlet of 3 times with issues around the orignal fitment of the LPG kit

Its rather differant now, I have a ex tractor workshop as a garage, can get all 4 LR in if I wanted+ a couple of normal cars! in there I have a compressor, 2 welders and looking for a cheep 4 post lift! on top of my normal tools

Its one pleasure of working on the series truck over the newer ones, bits are easier to get to! they tend to sill be right sods though!

Are you going to Shim the rockers for the tappets? I dont think this is needed in this aplication, was on a TVR I worked on once

Haven't posted on here for a while, cos usually I don't have much useful to say (heh heh), but this thread caught my eye.

I had similar problems with mine, ie Low power, dirty plugs and MOT failingly high HC. I went through a long process of changing plugs, points, dizzy cap, HT leads, coil, distributor, compression tests, and also (due to some bad advice) changing the fuel pump - all of which made no difference.

At wits end I took it to a garage I knew back home in Essex that did tuning and weren't afraid of old fashioned stuff. It took him about 1 hour to decide it was all down to the carbs - which he proclaimed were "just totally worn out".

I didn't believe it at first because it had gone from being driveable to pretty much useless in about 2 months. Didn't think carbs could wear out that quick, but I got them refurbed and that sorted it.
Hope this is of help.
