Rear Sailsbry oil seal

Post by V8_Disco »

My Stage 1 Passed the MOT on Friday, No Advisories

On Saterday the rear Diff oil seal started to leek, is it a big job to swap out, it looks a fair bit more involved than a standard Rover casing

Thanks

easy enough
dont remember it been any more difficult that a rover one (except getting enough torque on the nut when re-fitting

i recall you wanted to borrow my OD bits to copy so if you want to combine the two that would be useful 8)

The Salisbury is a bit different for this job in that you must mark the position of the pinion shaft, retaining nut, and flange, and then count the number of turns it takes to completely undo the nut. This is so that it will all go back together without putting more load on the collapsible spacer that sits between the two pinion bearings. If you did overload then you'd have to replace it.

They still seem to leak, though. I replaced one seal and it just leaked a little less than the old one . . . and also bought a new axle and that's leaking now anyway!

The key to stop them leaking is to replace the flange,
I had one that I had sleeved all looked good but it still leaked within a few hundred kays, replaced it with a brand new one and its been going for the last 3 years without issue.
There are also heavy duty seals that help a lot of the aftermarket stuff you buy in Australia is crap.

The key to stop them leaking is to replace the flange,
But . . . but . . . it was a new axle!!! Maybe being in storage did it.

However, that's good advice for any of these parts, whether on an axle or gearbox. I've used Speedi Sleeves and they can be quite good but a new flange is the best.
