oil Pressure guage + Speedo
oil Pressure guage + Speedo
Hi all
Couple of small questions
I have to take the car on a big run before the Guage starts to move? is this normal?
I have fitted a Gen Stage 1 Speedo head but its underreading, i assume its got the higher gering from the Range Rover, does a similar era range rover head fit? + does anyone have one!

I think the difference is in the speedo drive cog that sits on the output shaft of a range rover LT95 box. If it's any help mine reads 30mph doing 40mph. I have calculated/guessed that a 1000tpm speedo should be about right and bought one from fleabuy for less than £10 (Triumph Herald)- it fits and has the relevant holes for the lights (headlights, charge, oil pressure). I haven't actually tested it yet due to still having no brakes!
Sender
I'd say the sender is shot.
Mine was mad - anything between 0 and 100psi depending on what it felt like. Swapped it out.

I think Ben is right. The speedo drive cog from RR and Stage One are different. I instaled a RR-gearbox, and since that time my speedo is undereading. `think the difference between the speedo cogs is two teeth or so, but I don`t know ut exactly.
My oil pressure gauche starts climbing up after the engine is running for ten or twenty seconds, but only if the engine is cold. When it`s hot, it climbs imedeatly. The oil pump is new, so I think it`s nothing serious.
Perhaps I will change the sender in the near future.
regards
Horst

I forgot. I do not have an oil pressure gauge, instead I have an alarm that sounds when the oil pressure drops to a critical level. This always screams loudly until the engine is turned over then it stops quickly. Cranking the engine by hand will also bring the pressure up sufficiently to stop it.

It is easy to swap the cog out? It ust be towards the back of the box as the cable does not go in that far, they dont look that expensive ... certanly cheeper than 3 points and a fine!
I will have a closer look, I think it might be a case of needing a clean/swaping out engine runs fine

To swap the cog involves removing the handbrake and then the rear output shaft. I took the broken box supplied with mine apart and got the cog out fairly easily. The workshop manual does mention that everything must be reshimmed when reassembled if anything (e.g. speedo drive cog) has changed. At this point I decided to go down the line of getting a speedo with the correct turns per mile rather than trash the gear box through general mechanical incompetence! I believe the shimming is to give the correct force on one of the bearings which i presume would wear quickly otherwise.V8_Disco wrote:It is easy to swap the cog out?
Thanks Ben

unless you get lucky you will need to buy some shims, and may need to make/buy the stud (unless you got it with the od)

Hi,
fitting an overdrive is a rather easy job, but there is one thing you should care about: The main shaft mustn`t be moved when fitting the overdrive gear, because if this happens, the thrust bearing will fall down, and then you have to remove the gearbox from the car to put the bearing in the right position. So, notice: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES THE SHAFT SHOULD BE MOVED IN DIRECTION OF THE FRONT OF THE GEARBOX!!!
I know it, `cause it happened to me.
Good Luck
