Front recovery/lifting rings
Front recovery/lifting rings
I bought some of the Rocky mountain rings to fit. On my mates series 3 it's possible to put the bumper securing bolts through the recovery rings too, securing everything very nicely. However due to the stage 1's grill being further forward that doesn't work. Do I just drill 4 holes in the bumper, would this be strong enough? Tried to look at everyone's photos but can't quite see in enough detail.

The Stage 1 lifting eyes have a longer plate than on the examples you show. This plate passes under the front panel and secures using the existing bumper to dumb iron bolts. The front bolts simply bolt through the bumper. To answer your question – it would depend on the load that you intend to apply, but I would doubt that a simple bumper fixing would be as strong as bolting them through the dumb irons as per factory spec. Have you tried the Defender spec eyes?

The only part numbers that I can lay my hands on at the moment are 242139 and NRC5942, the latter being 1980 onwards. Note* these are the Stage 1 part numbers but contradict what items are available as these numbers still show up as standard SIII lifting eyes. We already know that the Stage 1’s are definitely different but in light of the 90/110/Defender having a similar design front end I’d be quietly confident that they would be the same. Maybe have a look at one if you can find one and then trot off to your local LR dealer and see what they come up with.
