I have finally decided to swap my box over for the one that's been taking up room in my garage, the current one in the landy is very noisy (layshaft bearings). The replacement is out of a Range Rover, a few bits are different and need changing over, but it all seems fairly straightforward. Does anyone know if the ratios are the same, some seem to think that the RR has slightly higher gearing and any tips from anyone who has changed one before.

Which model Range=Rover? Has the box been played with? Is the box any good?

The easiest way instead of guessing, is to compare parts lists.

My own experiences with used LT95's and just about any old 4X4 box is that they are usually boat anchors unless you have pulled them apart and proven otherwise. The LT95 is a bugger to change due to its size and weight. A job I loath doing twice. Even the usual pre swap repairs are so extensive that you have most of the box apart anyway. Oils seals, gaskets, oil pump, filter...

range rover box is alot higher
iirc the RR box is about 1.1:transfer ratio whereas the stage 1 is about 1.33:1
(or at least there in that area)
if you dont have an over drive the higher gearing could be usefull...with 750's and an over drive i think it may be to much

The Stage I was geared comparatively low at 1.336:1 since it was meant to be mainly a work vehicle and so needed the gearing for towing and so on. Over the years it became quite common to put in various Rangie gearsets. The highest of these is .9962:1 (45 teeth) and sounds like it can be a bit high, but any of the other gears at 1.174:1 (47 teeth), 1.113:1 (48 teeth), and 1.1227 (43 teeth), can give you a bit more speed at lower revs. The tooth count is for the front gear on the transfer idler shaft. To change the gearing you swap that gear and the one on the front of the centre diff.
