Unleaded and the V8 (from an SD1)

Post by sebking »

So.

As I thought the engine I have is from an SD1

39A00001A SD1 Factory recon 9.35:1 cr 1982-87

which explains why it has the wrong rocker covers, the oil filler is on the wrong side and why there is an oil temp sensor. it may also explain why it's on SUs and the air filter is missing its pipe work for the emissions.

So I have a higher compression ratio too.

Unleaded? is it happy to run on it or should I be chucking some additives in?

Shouldn't be a problem.

I use unleaded 95 octane in mine and no issues with it. But of course, given local conditions, YMMV.

unleaded

Post by redtailhawk »

unleaded can be used but over time the valves may regress in to the cylinder head . The lead in leaded petrol acted like a cushion between the valve and the valve seat . There is a article in either LRO or LRM this month on how to tell if your cylinder head as been converted to run on unleaded. Hope this helps sorry for getting technical you probaly know this already Cheers Darren

the SD1 was destined for the American market so it had enlarged valves and valves. According to some this means that it'll run on Unleaded.

Early engines will not, even though they are steel seats.
