Winch bumpers, returned

Post by disco2hse »

Been thinking a lot about putting a winch on the front of George.

I especially like Andy's set up here:

There are a few main concerns that I have:
1. With the winch on the front how does that affect cooling? The engine maintains excellent temperature control now and I don't want to mess it up.

2. George, as with the other army Landies here, has an oil cooler radiator below and to the right of the main radiator. I don't want to reduce air flow to that.

3. 35 Kg of winch stuck out front is a lot of weight. I have already moved the spare off the bonnet but how would that much weight affect the springs, etc.? Would I be better off looking at having a removable winch set up? You know, take it off except when I go offroad.

4. Electric, hydraulic or mechanical? I am not so keen on electric but they are a lot cheaper to buy and install; hydraulic would be good but I have no pump and that would mean another purchase plus pipes, etc.; a PTO winch would be great but they are hugely expensive and anyway I can't see how I could get a PTO shaft to the front. Has anyone done that?

I have a small electric one on the front of mine, permanently mounted. It makes absolutely no difference to the cooling.

I too would love a setup like the one up there^^^

I've heard of it being done but I've never seen one. I would like to make use of the pto on the transfer case but I guess that would mean a centre mounted winch.

You lucky bugger.

Did your stage 1 come from the army with the pto on the t/c?

The internals are there but the cover plate needs to be removed and the external connection put in. Problem is though that the rear fuel tank means it cannot be run out the usual place through the rear chassis member, but the shaft could be shortened for a mid-mounted winch. But that in itself would mean lots of engineering and I don't the money to do that :(

I stuck an overdrive on mine. Is that the same place as the pto goes?

Hmm, not sure what happened there. My post disappeared.

Anyway. I can't really answer your question because I've never fitted an overdrive. The pto comes out the rear of the transfer case though.
