Front brakes

Post by Finn1 »

One of the front wheel cylinders leaked so I bought a rebuild kit for the front axles (rear too) and fitted the cylinders & shoess only to find the hub wouldn’t go on. Suffice to say it seems to have standard 109 front brakes, I re-assembled the brakes with the old shoes. Having seen the size of those brake shoes I’m pretty keen to get it back to V8 Brakes.
The wheel cylinders seem to be different to 4cyl according to the parts manual and they went on OK, as did the shoes.

So, the questions are:
1, Are these V8 back plates? They look like the ones in the pic on Craddocks site, but neither 4cly or V8 that are drawn in the parts manual.

2, If I get the correct drums I’m it appears that they won’t sit on the drive Drive flanges correctly, sitting maybe 15mm outboard of the flange. Is the difference taken up in the drum itself? It looks like the same part number for the spacer between the back plate and the axle on the V8 as 109. Somehow I need move the back plate inboard by the correct distance to allow for the wider drum & shoes. It looks like the hub assembly is different for the V8 but The part number for the hub/drive flange is the same for 109 & V8. The actual front axle casing has a diff engine part number so, is it narrower than the 4cyl? The back plate really needs to move inboard or the front track will widen. I’m a but confused as to where the difference lies.

Do your wheel cylinders have mounting studs or holes for bolts?
Alternately, what is the bore diameter of the cylinders?

What is the diameter of your drum (measured across wear the shoes run)? It will be 10 or 11".

Genuine GIRLING backplates bare a manufacturer's part number stamped in. Though they are handed, they don't include this marking.

Six cylinder front brakes are larger in diameter and have wider shoes and drums than four cyl.

Rear is common with 110.

The back plate looks like the right one.

The drum diameter is 11" and the shoes are 3" wide. The drum is also larger on the V8.

In a recent job lot of V8 parts I bought there a 2 sets of back plates which are the same as the ones I have and some drums. The difference I’m on about is in the profile of the drum. The 4 cyl drum has a chamfer on the edge where the V8 one has a square edge With the o/a depth of the drums being the same. It looks like I just need to put on the V8 pads and drums and the job’s a goodun. :D

So have you actually purchased correct 6 cyl. front brake parts (drums, shoes and cylinders) and tried fitting them?

I've not tried to fit them yet. Hopefully I'll have a look at it in the next couple of weeks.

I recommend fitting brake shoes to drum brakes.

hehe, you're right!

I'm looking around for new drums. geez they're expensive! anyone had any experience with the Britpart drums? would really hate to spend 200 euros to then end up with just a very big paperweight

Cheers

As far as I can discern, all the repros are from one mystery manufacturer, so buy from whomsoever is selling them cheapest.

So, I've finally put on the 3 inch shoes and drums. What a difference! - its shite!
I was expecting them to take a few miles to bed in but I've done 300miles with some hard braking & "stoppies" to little avail.
I removed the drum to inspect and was expecting to see a bit of uneven wear as the diameters are always a wee bit different out of the box. I.E. wear on the ends or middle of the friction material however, on a couple of the pads the wear is down one side of the shoe (inside edge). So, its not squaring up to the surface of the drum as the pressure is applied. I've adjusted them but this has little effect.
Any thoughts before I sell the farm and buys discs?

Did you adjust the screws that control the angle of the shoes and make sure the fibre pads (tips) were on the end of those screws?
