Steering relay.
Steering relay.
There is about 8 inches of play at the steering wheel which I’ve tracked down to the steering relay.
It appears that this is different to the Series 2/3 Relay due to the forward position of the front cross member - an improvement really. However, a replacement unit is not available and talking to one parts suppliers, internals are not available either. Speaking with a rebound Land Rover specialist I got “Steering relay?”. After I explained the situation he was still drawing a blank.
Given my general scepticism of parts desk people (and the general state of the part bin rummaging going on in the British motor industry in the early 80’s) I somewhat doubt its a completely different animal from the S2/3 item. That said, given the state of the general state of the British motor industry in the 80’s and the fact it was done with Government funds, I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to design one from scratch.
Any way, my guess (hope) is that the body is a different casting while the internals are the same. Does anyone know what I’m likely to find in there?
Thanks,
Finn.

Your guess is correct. See here (page 1K 05):-

Re: Steering relay.
As above, read your parts book.
Mountings, main body, end cap screws and one arm are different. Most play issues are usually from a pinch bolt coming loose.
They are a fiddle to rebuild but DIY achievable.

Re: Steering relay.
I'm a lucky fella then as I have a brand spanking new replacement steering relay for mine for when I get around to it.

Re: Steering relay.
Where, when, how much? Just curious as I've a spare used one. Craddocks have it listed for £475 + VAT but I don't suppose for a moment they actually have one or can get one.
Re: Steering relay.
Came with the vehicle; PO liked to buy stuff for his maintenace/fixing store.

Re: Steering relay.
Thanks for that Geoff. I’ll order some bits today.
I did try to download the manuals but struggled to find a live link.
Craddock don’t have one. But, that academic as I’m not spending nigh on £600 on it.

Re: Steering relay.
Thanks Geoff, that's most helpful.
Out of interest, did the S1V8 get delivered with power steering? Mine has power steering but I can't seem to find much info on this other than it my have originated from a Military S1V8.

Re: Steering relay.
I'm pretty sure not, but I'm loathe to ever give any absolutely definitive answer to anything Land Rover anymore. map's sure to know.
Re: Steering relay.
There is supposed to be an aftermarket, bespoke conversion for a handful of armoured Land-Rovers used in Northern Ireland. I understand this utilised most of the original steering system and not the usual chassis chop 110/Disco conversion typically seen today.
Re: Steering relay.
Thanks. It does retain the bulk of the steering system.
I have to try and bleed it but there doesn't seem to any bleed nipple or the like. I'll try via the hose and see how far I get.

Re: Steering relay.
Ah, I remember a reference to this in an earlier thread I started about front props for these beasts, in which I referenced this discussion on another forum:-map1275 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 8:08 pm There is supposed to be an aftermarket, bespoke conversion for a handful of armoured Land-Rovers used in Northern Ireland. Re: Steering relay.
PAS should self bleed, just operate lock to lock with the engine running.
Re: Steering relay.
OMG what am I looking looking at there in the photo? Is it top looking down, back looking front, or what?
PAS options vary a lot and there were some after market conversions kits on the market at different times. The most common approach has generally been to fit the RRC set up.
