The bottom of the barrel?

Post by Geoff »

Have we reached it?:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142683984252?ul_noapp=true

For some years I've fancied a Stage 1 pickup but have recently come to accept that, unless I want a wreck for complete restoration, the prices now being asked are more than I'm willing to pay for an old Land Rover. And now I see that four people are actually bidding, not for an actual Stage 1 mechanical or body part, or even an owner's or workshop manual, but just for the V5 log book and VIN plate for one, no vehicle included. Am I missing something in my innocence? Do these have some value for nefarious purposes (I notice the seller's ebay name is 'nicksbits4u'!) or are 'enthusiasts' seriously now expected to collect these sad last remnants of a vehicle??

The plate will probably end up in Spain for rustoration and fitting to a refurbished body with other refurbished parts on a fully rustored vehicle for 80000 euros.
What's funny is that the current price (£25) is almost equal to the cost of ebay's Global Shipping to Australia for the item. Something that would fit in an envelope for £3 Air-Mail letter rate.

Count yourself lucky - seller won't post these valuable items to our American cousins at all apparently.

They'll end up in the States, attached to a Puma powered Defender with the owner pleading total innocence and ignorance.

A couple more nominations for 'silly prices' - ideal for your fake Stage 1 :

- unless of course any of you want to prove me wrong by buying these

Several years ago - I would have bet hard earned money that this was indeed the final destination for an item like this. We used to have a good supply of 1973 "Defenders" with 300 Tdi or Td5 engines being sold and imported. I am not sure who they thought they were fooling but it obviously satisfied the 25 year old import requirement from US Customs - until they smartened up. A few years ago Customs and Border Protection went around and confiscated 100+ trucks from owners' garages for age validation, exporting, or destruction. It was a huge deal that seems to have quieted down lately. The whole thing scared a lot of owners.

So I am not sure if this would make it into the USA today. But, our Australian friend MAP1275 is correct. The value of this part is to re-badge a truck so that it can be registered for the road.

So I can sell my Stage 1 off a bit at a time until there's nothing left, and then still have over £200's worth left after all?!? :

A few years ago Queensland Transport issued a confusingly worded bulletin (not unusual in itself). Roughly translated into English it read as 'we've made such a mess of monitoring and policing imports to any perceivable standard, that if you already have one, just go and see someone who certifies vehicle modifications and get them to put a blue plate on it'. There's an even better State Ombudsman report into VICROADS from around 2007.

Somehow missed this last post when it was posted and have only just watched the video. HORRIBLE! Nothing has made me feel so anti-American since they destroyed a load of valuable antique English silverware just because it contained tiny amounts of antique ivory, after changing some obscure rule and not bothering to tell anyone. If you don't want our Land Rovers, please send them back to us - crush the illegal importer instead!

It's all about votes and publicity. Sadly.
