Hi from Kent, UK

Post by speedster356 »

Hi all, I registered last year but didn't say hello. I've had my 109SW Stage 1 for a year now and had some fun playing in the mud & snow.

Here are some pics, hope you enjoy them as much as I did making them :D

I've now got her...(the photos on this thread disappeared so I had to go back and check)...

If I remember those photos correctly...it explained one thing - I did wonder how all that mud got into engine bay...be nice to have them as they show a little of her history.

Can tell you she's still working pretty well - lots of repairs rather than restoration...

She dropped her cooling system...cracked pipe...had a thermostat housing bolt shear off whist fault finding...wouldn't come out...so the inlet manifold came off to drill the bolt out.
Changed the cooling fan as the old one had lost a blade...
Cleaned up the contacts on the lights...so her electrics seem to be better...and now have some idea of the wiring loom...
Changed to the clear headlight lenses so I can actually see in the dark...sort of...
Got underneath and tightened up stuff - she doesn't drop a lot now...though worried about the gearbox/transfer box/overdrive - I've bought the oil (Castrol Classic 20W50)...and need to get it in there.

Garage had to help for the MoT - refurb radiator...got them to fit a new reverse light switch which I'd bought, and that has got the lights working again...new brake servo...and a detox...cost a bit, but made her run much better and safer - I don't have to do loads of panic cadence braking if I get cut up in London traffic now...oh and the welding...

Put in a clutch master cylinder to stop the drivers feet getting covered in hydraulic fluid and helps stop me killing the LT95 - I have no idea why they made one bolt so blind...everything else was easy - that one took hours, until we went and bought some ratchet ring spanners (BUY SOME...YES REALLY).

Amazed that the washer tubes are great at hydroponics - it's amazing at what grows inside...

She leaks too much though...even under a tarp (it's killed a radio...annoying as it was a DAB/Bluetooth device that, with your smart phone, brought her bang into the 21st century) ...and I've got to restart my preserve the chassis campaign again.

Have door tops, spare windscreen, 9 wheel rims not including the ones on her...some with Goodyear G90s on them.

Plan was to get a trailer and a tow car to move her...got the tow car (an old Discovery 3)...but found that Discos have a tow bar problem - though Land Rover are getting around to sorting some of them out, and may eventually do ours...if that happens - we'll get a trailer and look to keep the odometer down - she's a believable sub 65,000 mile car.

Many thanks to her previous owners for all the history that they've kept...my record keeping isn't great, but I'll look to continue their great work.

Just taxed her today.

Warning Parents should be wary of letting their kids read the Land Rover story when they're 9 years old...you never know what it might lead to.

MOT'd and insured for another year...though I'm not getting to drive her much after a head injury...hoping to be back in action in a couple of weeks.

Actually got the Smiths electric oil gauge to work eventually after changing 2 senders (it wasn't them) and by changing to a scavenged unit from a Range Rover Classic bought on eBay.

Acquired some LT95s and another v8 3528 twin Stromberg CD175 block from what looked to be an early Disco (no idea what condition it's in yet).

Have this crazy notion of getting a 101 to go alongside her as they share many of the same systems - including 11 inch drum brakes and much of the drivetrain with a common spares holding...other than financing the project, the logistics and space needed to hide 2 big Land Rovers in deepest suburbia without annoying the neighbours is part of concern.

It's made me think - as it looks like we're down to the last 120 vehicles in the UK (https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?utf8=%E2 ... mit=Search) - should there be a move to combine preservation efforts with the 101 club and early model Range Rover classic clubs?

Still haven't cracked the photo upload yet - which is a shame, because she's something to behold on a sunny day in Richmond Park...even with the possibly excessive patina.

Also - has anyone seen Classic Land Rover magazine (http://www.classiclandrover.com/)- I haven't seen any Stage 1 features in the issues that I've seen...Do you think it might be worth someone on the forum getting a Stage 1 feature in there???

Interesting idea, sharing conservation efforts. How would that work?

The last stage 1 I saw in the mag was the yellow 88" that went round the drift track.
Would be nice to have a stage 1 forum feature, would be nice if they shipped our lands over to NZ and did the feature there!

Hi Jeremy... Can you tell me which month?... I'm getting my CLR copies through the tablet app and haven't worked out which issue from the content previews.

I wonder if owners clubs see CLR as a threat to their newsletters?... Not that the Stage 1 forum is affected.

Maybe a Stage 1 special edition of CLR... To balance all those Series 1s... Get our friends in the Southern hemisphere to contribute a section.

I'll try the advice on photos and see how i get on.

A few thoughts on long term spares and preservation...

I think it would be good if we could identify organisations that could refurbish or reproduce parts which are distinct to the models... For the 101, Stage 1 and early Range Rover classic... With many of the drive train components shared, that could help with economies of scale.

For parts distinct to each model, like steering components... We may need to source the original component drawings to allow them to be remanufactured. If no drawings exist, we may need to examine them, possibly 3D scan them with metrology equipment to allow a dimensionally accurate replacement to be made... Though I understand functionality could be down to considerations such as metallurgy.

I guess suppliers such as Pegasus Parts might be commercially interested in doing that.

For some things, I'm wondering if additive manufacturing techniques could be exploited.... Certainly plastic trim which has broken is an ideal candidate for scan and reproduce... plastic parts wasn't economic to produce in small bespoke quantities before, so if broke and there was no more spares, that was it.... Might when where more advanced additive methods are being used for structural/, functional metal parts.

I did run into a small manufacturing company who could reproduce plastic and rubber components at a trade show (Farnborough, so they were claiming aerospace credentials) this year... I don't think it's a unique capability, but if the historic Land Rover community could build a relationship with a such a company, it could provide enough business for them to establish that as part of their product line or provided services.

We may need to identity interior restorers who can reproduce those parts...I know of Exmoor trim's products, but there are other parts that may need more specialist help.

I found that a friend of mine who I know through the completely different world of dance music is an engineer at JLR... During some of our chats this year, he said that JLR were interested in supporting historic vehicles... We might need to lobby a bit too ensure that the Stage 1 gets considered.

Btw...
I'm wondering if there should be a Stage 1 presence at the annual Land Rover London to Brighton run... I've looked at the photos and videos from the last few years and I've not seen a single Stage 1.

It's usually run in early October.... Though that's usually a bad time for me with holidays and restarting the amateur football season...Nora sometimes earns a living as the club transport on Sunday mornings as you can literally get a football team in her.

I have a subscription to CLR (the Stage 1 centre spread is in this month's issue - Dec, Issue 43 - it's a known picture online - you can see it here: http://www.favcars.com/pictures-land-ro ... 9-85-65899) and am a member of the Series 3 & 90-110 Owners Club and receive an e-newsletter from them - I don't see why one should be a 'threat' to the other. More importantly, JLR are indeed supposed to be remanufacturing parts for the older models to original specifications. If anyone has contacts with the company like you, they should indeed be made aware that there are a lot of us around the world very interested in maintaining this particular very important transitional model (which many of us see as the best of both worlds) in its original condition.

Having always worked in the dealer network for LR I cant see any parts being remade by the factory...

The reality is most parts are out there, if you know where to look and who to ask.

This months CLR(number 44) has a photo of a Stage 1 (ambulance conversion) in their coverage of London to Brighton.

I've done the run many times in many different Land Rovers (2b Fire Engine was possibly most fun) - problem is its not as fun now the routes changed and clashes with Newbury so I dont do it anymore

Didn't even mention it was a Stage One. Maybe there's no one at JLR anymore who knows what one is either.
