Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
Tried the mach5's off a mates Defender 90 on to see how they look. . .
Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
The Defender flares don't look right. They close the arches in too much. Nor do the wheels. Period Range Rover wheels would look better, that unless you want this thing to look all bling but then it will lose the essence of the Stage 1.88 stage1 wrote:

Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
I agree. It's your truck, but it's also a rarity, and it would be a shame to turn a bit of Stage 1 history into something that looks more like a NAS 90. Just my opinion of course, but then what would you expect on the Stage 1 forum? When you say standard wheels looked lost under the arches, did you mean standard short wheel base or long wheel base rims? - because I suggested the latter. I think the smaller wheels fitted as standard to the 88 do look a bit 'noddy car' in this day and age, unless you like the Postman Pat look, and fitting lwb rims is a common and easy mod, but not a very radical alteration - it's even possible a Stage 1 88 inch prototype may have been fitted with them at the factory, isn't it? (Anyone know? - any photos?)

Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
Doesn't make it right. As the article says, that was because the guy was only a boy racer.88 stage1 wrote:http://s1046.photobucket.com/albums/b469/88stage1/ Have a read of the mag article on here, the arches and wide wheels are not my idea, they are part of the history of the truck.

Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
Interesting article & I kinda stand corrected (have you actually read it, Alan?) - seems it actually was a kind of early NAS 90!
Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
I haven't had a chance to read it all actually.
From your comment. I will try to find the time, but not today.

Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
I've spent some time today looking at disco, long wheelbase wheels and the very interesting article by Mr F. Wit on how to id the different variants!! long wheelsbase or fwd control look to be the ones 2 go for!! They seem hard to come by mind. I agree the mach 5's are wrong but think the colour looks good?? I've removed most of the boy racer mods, the front bullbar n stainless bits so what you see now is how it was originally built!! I just need to sort some wheel then rebuild and fit the original engine when time/funds allow.
Re: Hi all, new owner stage1 88 prototype
What about split rims? Might be easier to get from ex-military sources.

Huh, well well well.. That really is an interesting read.
So, this is a more remarkable prototype than I thought. So, about those wheels then. Is it possible to find a picture of the Cariba?

Yea, the detailed memories of the guy on the build team are amazing when you think of all the vehicles he must of worked on!!! A quick search revealed :- They look like silver 8 spokes. . .
