good to see that there is something going on in the Stage 1- scene after the LR internet club page seems to have faded away.
I own two RHD Stage 1 projects, the first one being a (pretty abused) 1981 ex- waterboard truck cab with a rotten chassis and a sludgy engine, the second one is a 1981 Carawagon camper conversion with no (honestly!) holes in the frame and only a tiny little hole in the drivers side footwell. Must have been dry stored and only used for occasionally holiday trips to the south of Europe. Unfortunately the Carawagon- specific interior has been removed and the roof hinges are shot.
As I´ve been pretty busy this year I hope to start working on the one or the other in 2006, so I might show up here regulary with the one or the other question.

Like the carawagon. Learned a couple of things recently. Didnt know they made a carawagon or a crew cag Stage 1, and through this site another Stage 1 HiCap has turned up. Thats 4 i know of now and one of them is scrap.

Mine is already equiped with two additional fuel tanks (under both front seats, internal filler) and an overdrive. Looks all as if it´s factory spec and not fiddled in later.
the previous owner has probably swapped the roof with a second hand ex military roof. if the interior was there, there must be holes to match.
iff it originates from holland this probably happened, as converted to a camper the roadtax was only a quarter of the cost of a normal stationwagon. 5 years ago the taxman has checked up all the landrover campers and many did not pass (you had to have beds, a cooker, a sink, ample storagespace etc.). a lot of people only had a campinggas burner, a bucket and loose storageboxes. everything had to be permanent fixed to the car. a lot of people did not convert their car to the taxmans standard and unfortunately sold their car.
this one was imported from the UK in 1986 and has the original CARAWAGON badges- looks all very original. Two hammocks are also still in place, I´ll post a pic if I ever get my data from my 2nd HDD back...
it must be the original roof; the military- ones were all hardtops.
as yours is a stationwagon the roof is fitted with the alpine-windows it should be the original roof.
i like the frontbumper (bearmach).
on my car there is also a pop-up roof with a doublebed (homemade, looks like a standard tropical roof and is in fact a converted tropical roof).
for one year we had a dormobile roof.
it was very handy and had plenty of space, but i got rid of it as it did not look right, so i am back to my own homemade roof (a bit like a volkswagen camperroof with lifthinges and gasstruts to keep it up).
