Hi from across the atlantic

Post by filthychimp03 »

hey i wanted to say hello, i got my series 3 v8 for my 13th birthday, just to tell u i was only 13 in dec 2006. Its a family tradition that we have; when me and my brother turn 13 we get a classic car to do up until we're ol,d enough to drive...my brother is 15 and in one of the pics you can see his morris minor. I'm called max by the way, i just moved over to the US from England about 1/2 a year ago. I purchased my landy from ebay, it has a military chassis which was fitted before my purchase, and runs nicely. There is some rust especially in the interior. The little knowledge i have of the engine comes from my bro (jack)'s morris and my best friend the haynes manual!! :D

see my pics here

ps how do i add pics to the actual topic instead of a link to another website?

mate, with the iddling problem, you have a hand throttle?? try moving it up a bit to keep the reves up. does the truck idle fine when not changing gears?? do you know if the restrictors have been removed or if it has an aftermarket exhaust system?? these may contribute to problems, i'm sure there are plenty of other causes but these are things i have noticed, not only with Landrover's, sometime's contribute to what you have described.

have fun with the truck

the truck idles ok when not in gear, but the man i got it from on ebay said that it was a bit loud while idling...i think most classic cars, especially series are loud!! it has the original exhaust system in place, but i will have to check about restrictors. to be honest i have no idea what a hand throttle is so i will look that up in my haynes now

When I preping my stage1 would its MOT it would idle perfectly but as soon as you put any load on it would start to pop and die. It turned out to be vacumn leaks on the carbs. Try spraying carb cleaner around where the shafts come out of the carbs. If the revs rise a bit you have the smae problem as me.

Cure:
  • Rebuild carbs
    replace them
I ended up replacing mine with a pair of SU's

The other common causes of bad running on a rover V8 are:

Ignition system. The dizzies are not the best when new but when worn send the timing all over the place. I ended up fitting an electronic one from a range rover. They are also very fussy about cheap & nasty ignition leads.

Mixture. Relates to what I said above but make sure its 100%. A CO2 analyser makes this a lot easier (£18 on ebay :D )

at the moment i do not have stromberg carbs...the man who sold me the car has been gr8 in sending lots of spares along with the car. he has emailed recently to ask if he should send the strombergs over...i accepted, do you think it is a good idea to replace the carbs i have with the strombergs that are coming over? at the moment i have zeniths. should i make the switch?

Probably not a lot!

Always good for spares though.

What size & make of carb is on your brothers morris?

1 3/4" stomberg might fit nicely :D

It should have an A series engine so buy a mini twin SU manifold and bung both carbs on.

That plus a decent exhaust and LCB manifold should make it go a bit faster.

Then you are into high lift rockers and big valve heads and you will need to upgrade the brakes and the suspension...................................

Just bung the morris body on the stage 1 instead :D

That is a 1.5" su just like my old mini pickup.

Bolt on one of your spare stombergs with on of these and you should notice a bit of a difference.

p.s. I resized your pics for you as they were a touch on the big size.
