I've always secretly hankered for a Stagey

Post by F**kw*t »

Hello all.

I'm a newby and I've alwasy secretly hankered after a proper Stagey. I owned a very stock-looking 109 and it ran a breathed-on 2.5 petrol, and I' gassed it. Now with a 2.5 not being exacty frugal, and a hot cam is not helping, I am left wondering.

I wonder why oh why, why i didn't just go for a Stagey in the first place. ... yes I could put an eight in, but somehow a V8 conversion is 'not really in my heart it.

Sorry i ahve no V8 credentials at present, but now I'm seriously looking for my own.. So here I am. Along with a hankering for a One ton, (and I'm not sure which is rarer) i sit wondering and wishing.

I'm a leaf-spring fan, and my idea of heaven would be this:

Stagey porn.

Luvverly... even down to its rims. Gimme, gimme.

Anyway, I hope i can add to the grist.

I apologise, I understand from a PM via the Idi Admin of thsi parish that many of you have taken exception to my moniker. Forums liek this or any other are not a democracy, they are run for the purposes of those that pay the hosting. I have no issue with this and find myself astounded by those that do. I see my moniker as rather self-effacing and it is one I have used on other forums, so I used the same f**kw*t moniker here, because, well... it made sense to me. As I've become older I realise no matter how intelligent I used to think I was, now I know I know nothing. Nothing. That realisation comes with age.

i try to write posts that people want to read, fact-filled ratehr stuff filled with pointless opinion. I hope those below prove this, no one wants to know what I think, only what I know. Most ahve a conceit and write like they think they matter. They don't. I don't.

My posts on other forums:

f**kw*t is my name,

I'm sorry if f**kw*t offends, but if it truly does, I'm in the wrong place, so thsi will be my last post.
I will try to be more PC, but at my age I struggle.

You are right that it is not a democracy, but in a democracy, those that participate agree to the mores of the general populace. Democracy does not mean "I can do and say what I want". So in this regard, the forum is pretty democratic. A read through the posts on this forum ought to show that there is a general note of civility and respect. That is the democratic agreement we have agreed to. There is also an absence of bad language. Additionally, we are only enthusiasts and most are willing to be corrected, so we don't know everything, or much of anything.

I hope this is not your last posting because we value the input from many people, regardless of background.

If at some point you find yourself with a 109 V8, then great. It is an unusual beast and its needs are peculiar to a transitional model. For me, it comprises the parts that the Series III needed but didn't have (Salisbury diff in the rear and one in the front would have been good, and the V8).

Personally, I know it has faults and there are many times that I would rather have coils (or greater articulation) and front and rear lockers (in the absence of greater articulation), but I accept it has its weaknesses and I take those into account when I go into gnarly ground. To get myself out of trouble, I put in a pto winch and if necessary, a hand winch. It's built tough and takes the knocks, more than most other vehicles on the road.

The good thing about this model, it mostly uses parts from the parts bin and are interchangeable, but there are some bits that are unique (like the front swivels). As it gets older, these will require various approaches to keep it on the road. I have had to come up with a number of cost effective alterations to the original design to keep things going, like getting rid of the monster alternator, installing a charge equaliser, getting rid of the hinky army designed ignition system, designing and installing a better CDL actuator, the pto winch above... and heaps more.

At least in NZ, there are a lot on the road (mostly ex-army but a lot of Civvies too). So they are not a completely unknown entity.

Perhaps I got off on the wrong foot. Apologies. I am certainly not expecting a free-speech-free-for-all out of thsi forum or any other. I'm very serious about a Stage one, see my Sales and Wanted post.

They're rather rare aren't they. Loooks like there's more in NZ et al than here in Blighty. Jeeez, I'll end up importing one.

I may be soem time....

Generally all prices are on teh up. Have you seen in the hands of "Classic' dealers, what a sorted early 70s RR or a decent S2 109 SW goes for these days?!

OK, Get your wallet out.

Yeah, don't really have them here. If it's second hand, it might end up in a used car years. Otherwise, most are private sale and the rest are auctions.

Prices are very stable. $3500-$6500 for a reasonable to good running Stage 1.
