Roll cage

Post by JimB »

Folks, I was wondering thoughts/ideas on roll cages for a Stage One.

Obviously the steel frame for my canvas isn't going to do anything in the event I flipped the car over... and a few times while bush bashing, the thought has occurred to me that the vehicle might roll over if I wasn't such an expert off-roader(!).

I see a lot of Defenders and CJ7s with roll cages, but I wonder about the bends in the steel tubing (lack of triangular bracing) and just how effective these otherwise attractive roll cages are - I am not really sure if these roll cages are for show or they hold up when things get hairy (I never see their cars dirty now that I think about it).

Has anyone got a good sketch/plan for a roll cage for a canvas-top Stage One?

Just to be clear I am not tackling really tricky terrain (i.e. my Landy is basically completely stock) and while I do have quite a bit of 4x4 experience, when things slip and slide it's hard to predict what will happen.
All advice/input welcome!

You can see the rear of the car with the steel frame, which is pretty flimsy.

The cage is one thing, what it's mounted to is the next issue.
Just from the concept of 'falling' over, which is a very low speed reality, the Australian design for the army 110 is reasonable and unobtrusive. Plus providing high and low seat belt anchorages. I think I have the EMEI (EMER) for the upgrade to the same, which includes basic drawings for the installation of the later upgrade.
If you want to get serious the Surveillance Recon Variant was the only one where the standard side panels were reinforced and actually supported the ROP

I'm just about to order a bolt on heavy duty frame. Same as the galv one above. While technically not a proper roll cage as it doesn't bolt to the chassis it will be substantially better than normal hoops, you also won't have much around the B pillar but I'll feel more comfortable with it than not..
