Replacement brake servo

What are folks doing for brake servos?

Suffice to say AEU1043 is not leaping out of the internet at me.

Will a Type 50 STC2878 (early 90/110) with the pedal end modified do the trick?

I needed one last year. My garage supplied and fitted a pattern one and said they'd guarantee it for a year if they did so, No problems so far (I hope not famous last words) It came in a Britpart box and was made in Taiwan, so I at least feel I'm doing my bit to support non-Communist Taiwan! :)

I've just looked a bit further at this & the STC1816 is the standard Series 2/3 6" servo. where the V8 (or mine is) has an 8" diameter servo.

The type 50 is also 8" & discussed here: http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/dual_brake_conv.htm

I'm not to keen on making the brakes worse.

Yes, you'd just need to alter the clevis by re using your original. They both have the same rebuild kit too (18g8951l), so you could just rebuild your original instead.

I measured a scrap servo from a 1979 lightweight recently and it was a 7 inch unit. Was the same size as the generic stc1816 it was being replaced with (master cyl seal failure had filled it with brake fluid - consider changing the m/c while your there if it’s not in excellent condition). Got me thinking now as the one on my stage 1 is tricky to measure accurately in situe but does seem a little small for 7 inches so maybe they were only 6 inch and stc1816 is thus an upgrade?

I’m planning to convert mine to a type 50 but everything is different so it’s definitely not just a swap job. The clevis is different (but the 101 parts shop sells one adapted to an eye end so that’s that sorted), unit has a longer rod but a shorter body and the bolt pattern to the pedal box is also different - I think this means with a 25 mm thick adaptor/spacer it could fit the s3 pedal box and due to the rest of it being shorter the master cyl will still be in about the same position. Wing and steering clearance will be tight but I think it will fit.

One ten master cylinders have a smaller bore so that gives them more hydraulic advantage over a series 3 setup to further help squeeze the front disc brakes. Not sure if the pedal ratio is different as well, could be hence the different pedal tower. I have a friend with a stage 2 110 with a type 50 servo so one day will get round to measuring that. I Don’t know why some 110s had the type 50 where as others had the type 80, the parts book surgests both existed alongside eachother with the rest of the braking system the same so can only conclude some just have lighter pedals than others and I don’t know how they decided a vehicle was worthy of what, though I suspect the later the vehicle the more likely it is to have a type 80.

I ended up buying a STC2878 for some reason. The Clevis needs pinching which is easy enough but the 4 bolts holding it to the pedal tower are a different spacing so I welded a plate to the pedal tower and all is dandy. A nip in the inner wing was necessary too. Being 227mm dis it stops quite well.
