Hi, I've seen Stage 1s with Series 3, and Defender type mirrors. I also see the Defender type mirrors are sold as Series 3 too. Where all Stage 1s sold with Series 3 mirrors type only?

Kind regards,
George

Stage Ones predate what you call 'Defender' mirrors, but the latter are so superior to all earlier Land Rover mirrors that everyone who seriously wants to see what's behind them fits them. They look fine except perhaps on a very original Series 1 or 2. The best upgrade you can make and no one seems to decry their lack of originality, which can't be said for a lot of other so-called 'upgrades' popular over the years.

As per the parts book for all late Series III. Just stating Series III means nothing. The general shape you've pictured is correct.

Depending on model and market there are two designs, with glass variations in each.

Wing mounted (hence the plastic grommets), with either the round or rectangular-ish head or hinge mount. Early hinge mount don't mount directly to the hinge. In either case they are a WINGARD arm and WINGARD head. Not BRITAX or BEARMACH. There should be a longer stem towing version but apparently not. Though WINGARD do appear to have made a suitable arm.

If it's a very, very late UK model, there is a possibility it might have had the 110 arm and head with the notorious ball mount.

The correct item has the snap-back feature but you don't want to walk into one. Glass size is slightly smaller than the 110 version and they can't be readily adjusted for multiple drivers. However once set correctly they don't have the notorious ball problem. Leyland look to have purchased WINGARD's top of the line mirror and not either of their lesser versions which look similar.

'Defender type mirrors' are sold as for the Series 3 also because they can be fitted to Series 3 Land Rovers and are a common 'upgrade'.

And of course, the military variant uses the Spafax mirror mounted onto the rod with a U clamp.
