Heat shields

Can anyone tell me what the heat shields in the parts book are supposed to be for? I don't have any and can't say, in 21 years, I've noticed the lack of. In particular, why does the book only show one for the non detoxed engine on the LH exhaust manifold, and only one for the detoxed engine on the RH manifold?? :?: :?

There isn't any on the left. Hence the manifold doesn't have any provision.
RH is for the starter and there are three types. Or at least two as I've never encountered the listed third.
Plus the one for the RH carb.

Thanks. Had another look at the parts book. They turned the manifold in the bottom diagram on page 1F 09 though 180 degrees, presumably to show the fixings' location better, so I thought it was the LH manifold following the same layout as on the manifolds page 1F 08  (would have helped if they'd done the same with the top diagram) I love the Series 3 Parts Book - it requires as much interpretation as the Good Book :?

I can think of a lot, lot worse:
The current MAN fleet, Unimog, Moke...

... then I'm glad I don't have to deal with them.

Now that I know what I'm looking for, I had a more thorough look down there amongst the rust with torch and mirror and find I do have the requisite shields on the RH manifolds of both my vehicles after all. They're ERC5875, not the ERC5786 I saw about half price on ebay. So that answers my question. I didn't know they were there - obviously - having never had cause to consider the matter before (the shield on my old 2.25 was a rather more obvious affair) I didn't understand your initial reply at first, until I had a light bulb moment looking at the diagram in the parts book and the part of the manifold where the EGR valve would go if there was one, so thank you.

Just a footnote on the Series 3 parts book - this time the Optional Equipment Parts Catalogue actually (for which I forked out nearly £17 for a paper copy because the only online copy I could find was unreadable) - it doesn't have a diagram of the heater pipes and hoses for the V8 - it has detailed ones for the 2.25 and 2.6, but not for the V8 - there is a blank page where it ought to be! The early 110 book has detailed diagrams for all the engines including the V8 (looks completely different) The blank page in my (expensive) paper copy of the Optional Equip. book has printed across it in bold type 'This page is intentionally left blank' !!! WHY?!? TO DRIVE YOU MAD, THAT's WHY! Sorry, just venting ... ignore me (unless anyone's copy has just such a diagram - fat chance - it's not actually that important, just an example of Murphy's editing - no doubt there are many more lurking in waiting for me :( )

hahaha, I hear you. In a past life I spent much time designing big and technical document structures for industry, airlines, and military. That text in a box thing does my head in big time. This page intentionally blank. ... but it's not!!, there's text on it !!! :x :x

Weirdly, I have a memory of the pipe work you are referring to, but now I can't find it.
