Both Zenith Carb damper/pistons not lifting

Post by FireTruck »

Hi All,
Wondering if anyone has any idea why the dampers/pistons on both carbs(factory zeniths) will not lift ?
I have checked diaphrams, look fine.
While running, if i manually open the dampers, with a screwdriver, it roars into life and sounds great as it should, so they are not stuck..
Engine will start, and run, but is only getting air in through the breather ports that are normally plumbed into the rocker covers.. if they are connected to rockercover, engine doesnt get enough air and dies.
It will drive at upto 65kmh but is obviously very restricted..
It was running fine previously, then after afew months of being parked, it was hard to start. Replaced the batteries, checked plugs, leads ect. Now have it started again, but running like a sack, and find no lifting action in both carbs!?
Cheers for any help..

Carbon/tar build up above and around the piston, something literally causing the piston to stick.

Otherwise, you've managed to block one of the air ports that allows this piston to rise. Frequently done when the air cleaner inlets are removed and the gaskets are moved or replaced. You can also check the diaphragm but these are rarely the issue they are presented to be.

'AA book of the car' has a better and simpler explanation. Not in print but still readily available.
