Remanufacture of classic parts

Post by v8alligator »

Hi all,

Being a land rover owner of several variants including a few stage ones I know how difficult it is to get some of the more obsolete parts which we all need to keep our vehicles going.

With this in mind I have just set up a design and manufacture company and one area we specialise in is the remanufacturing obsolete parts for Land Rovers.

Mainly focusing on the classic stuff rather then the modern vehicle range.

Our portfolio includes everything from machined parts, plastic mouldings, welded fabrications and sheet metal work.

There is nothing we won't take on as long as there is enough interest. We are not talking hundreds either. Depending on the item it could be as low of just 20 parts.

I have a few customers asking if I could reproduce the heater control valve for the stage one.

I know there has been alot of talk on the forum about this item and people looking for suitable alternatives.

I have stripped one today and am confident that I can remake these for sensible money. They would look identical and would still operate as a bypass type valve but would have enhanced sealing features internally and will most likely be aluminium bodied.

The only issue at the moment is the volumes heavily set the sale price so are there any stage one owners out there which would be interested in one for there vehicle?

Regards

Bryan

So you'd make the British valve, not the Australian one?

I was going to make the 4 port one which I have in front of me... :)

Is there a difference??? What are the differences? I might be able to make a universal type of there application is similar.

I don't see the point in making a universal one. Otherwise you might as well go to the local auto store and buy whatever cheap inline tap they have, such as the Ford/Jaguar item.

What specifically is the difference? I know our army ones in NZ were CKD so they would be british and I would be interested in one. There times when I would love to have cold air pumped around my feet on a hot day.

All,

Here is what I am about to manufacture.

I am doing a batch of just 15 and they will be made from Stainless and Aluminium. They are a direct swap out for the originals but I have improved the design of the internal seals and changed the way the whole thing bolts together to make it possible for me to CNC Machine the parts.

If anyone would like one then let me know. I have not got a finished price yet but as soon as I have made the 1st one I will be able to provide a unit cost.

No need for commitments at this time..

Just email me your details and when they are ready I can get in touch with all those who would like one.

Info@designdevelopmenteng.co.uk

If there are any other stage one parts which anyone would like to have manufactured. Let me know as I'm happy to do any parts as long as there is enough interest..

Bryan,

big one would be stage 1 front halfshafts. If you did these in standard 10/23 splines in standard strength they could be done quite cheaply. Fairly sure a lot of owners would buy a few sets at a time. - I would.

In fact you could do the lot, the main wearable/breakable parts in a stage 1 front axle (that aren't available on the pattern-apart market) are:

- halfshafts (would need to be made - no one makes these except uprated ones from Kam and Heystee)
- CV joints (no need to make these, you can use the early coiler ones by turning down the drive members slightly) - but you could supply the turned-down drive members - pegasus already do this, so you'd need to compete price wise. Just need to do a machining drawing then buy the drive members new
- Swivel balls - common wisdom is that these are the same parts as the standard series ones but with a bit of additional machining done to the cast ball. Some people do this by hand - I've compared the two side by side and its a tiny bit of extra machining (don't think anyone supplies these - if you did the machining drawing you could just buy new swivels and get them done in batches). See the disc brake conversion thread on here for an excellent write-up. don't think anyone does this.
- Upper swivel pin (kingpin) - pegasus make these, but understandably quite a bit more expensive than standard series stuff (£25 vs £5).
- Railko bush - unique to the stage 1 - again pegasus supply them.
-oil seal retainer (small pressed bit) - NLA.
-stub axles - there is a coiler one that can be converted by turning down the mating ace to match the stage 1 aperture. New pattern part plus tiny bit of machining = stage 1 v8 replacement.

The above gets you close to ffering a CV conversion kit for standard series rovers too. Only thing missing would be steering arms (different pin for the bearing) and swivel housing (not sure how you'd deal with that)
