Prop shaft

Post by IanC »

Does anyone know where I might be able to get a Stage 1 front prop shaft part no LR524 - I have significant driveline vibration but only under load for instance second gear up hill and suspect worn front prop but can't seem to find one - any ideas? Thanks

Don't know where you have got that number from, which doesn't even look like a common Land Rover part number to me. The correct part number for the complete 109V8 front prop shaft assembly is FRC2175. If you can even find a good one, expect to pay well over £1,000 for it new. Craddocks have them listed for £250 but obviously at that price they are pattern ones, and I have not heard particularly good things about them (I have one myself in my attic as an emergency spare but have never had to fit it so I can't say) You'd probably be better to find out exactly what is wrong and, if it is something on the front prop, have it repaired by someone like these people:

Are you sure it is the prop shaft and not just the ujoints?

I had a ujoint go bad in my front shaft once. It was hard to see the bad wear and movement while it was all assembled in the double cardon - but once I get it all apart the ujoint was revealed to be severely worn.

Ujoints are cheap and easy - maybe worth a try??????

If you replace one - replace them both in the double cardon joint.

Are with the above, if you have a shaft get it to a propshaft specialist and get it repaired. There's nothing unusual or complex about these (well for a LR there is, but not to the rest of the world)

Really? Is that how much they are worth new? Thank god I got my spare for $50 when I did then.

But yes, UJ's first. It is only when the sliding bit is buggered that you need to place the whole unit. Keep it well greased and it'll last for like, ages.

From your description though, I would also check elsewhere because if it were UJ's etc. then wouldn't you get the vibration across a wider range of situations? For example, I would check the engine and gearbox mounts to see that they haven't broken or the rubber vibration dampers haven't collapsed.
