Front diff question

Post by Andywmb »

Hello. I'm looking for some advice regarding the front diff on my 81 stage 1. I apologise in advance that my technical terminology isn't the best and I'm still fairly new to the stage 1.

I'm needing an input oil seal for my front diff as its leaking badly ( where the front prop shaft connects into the diff) does anyone know the part number or what the front diff/axel is the same as? I've had a search but I'm getting different answers.

Many thanks in advance.

The part number for the front differential oil seal on the Stage 1 is FRC4586 - it's the same part as for all Rover type differentials, ie all Series Land Rovers 1950-1984 (front and rear on the 88in, front only 109) (and excepting the 109 1 Ton) and also the Range Rover Classic to 1986 and Defender to KA930455.

The Series 3 Parts Catalogue (which includes Stage 1) and other useful manuals are available to view or download free online here:

Land Rover Workshop is a useful website to start searching for or identifying parts once you have a part number:

While I'm on the topic of front diffs, is there an easy way to fix the back lash in them? It's not noisy apart from a "clunk" when pulling away. there's a lot of movement when turning the prop shaft by hand with the wheels on the ground.
