rear propshaft

Post by stoddster »

My rear prop shaft has sheared off at the diff UJ. Not sure it can be repaired as damage to the two components which attach on. Looked very dry inside on the diff side of th UJ with no grease and no grease nipple. There was a vibration for a while and looks like it has worn through. Looks mlike these shafts are hard to find and at great expense? Looking for any suggestions.

Just to clarify, is it the universal, the prop shaft or the diff shaft that has broken?

Forgive my ignorance but still learning, it is the u shaped part at the rear end of the rear prop shaft which looks like it attaches to the pins of the universal joint which has become completely detached. The two round components that sit over the pins have lost maybe half an inch of their depth?

Right. Probably insufficient maintenance.

Take the prop shaft off and take it to a drive shaft repairer. Have a new universal fitted to the prop shaft and balanced. Refit with new bolts. Grease all universals, including those others that have not been done previously.

Series III Repair and Operation Manual, page 47-1.
