Post-refurb woes!

Post by NZstage1 »

Hey all,

I'm nearing the finish of my stage 1's "Freshen up" and i'm having some annoying issues! Firstly, the trucks been sitting with very little fuel in it for around 2 months, so I thought I should just make sure it still goes (Bearing in mind that it started and ran pretty well pre rebuild and nothing engine wise has been touched).
Cranked the damn thing until the battery went flat on very liberal choke but no joy...flooded the bejesus out of it! Left the carbs to drain for a week and tried again with a little bit of new fuel. Started up no sweat, ran a bit lumpy and smoky but evened out after revving it up a few times. Took it for a 50 metre drive and it was horrendous! Backfiring, hesitating and being very reluctant. Seems like the choke is stuck on, but the linkage etc are free of any jams, or stiff movement.

I tried to reset the choke by slackening the nut on the carb off to release the cable, and re tightened it. Now the truck wont start again and I don't want to flood it again. Its 2 days away from losing its WOF and I desperately need it driveable + super reliable as it will soon become my sole daily driver, and long trip vehicle. I am very tempted to send it down to my local LR specialists! I'm guessing my carbs need balancing, choke definitely needs fine adjustment and it probably wants a good dose of new fuel plus a good drive. But I need to make sure its not going to spectacularly die on me! Dash pots are full, Ignition produces a nice fat blue spark so no probs there.. maybe timing as well?

Any other suggestions that I should look out for?

Sounds a bit like one of the carb diaphragms has died. To examine them, take out the dashpot pistons, undo the 4 screws on top of the carbs and gently remove the top. If the diaphragm has a crack in it, symptoms are lots of black smoke and maximum about 10 kph in 2nd gear!

Cheers,

may be worth draining out the old fuel. my fuel tank seems to be a magnet for water which doesn't make it run too well after it's been sitting outside for a while

Right, its been a while but i'm back!

I'm very pleased to say that the truck is now mechanically sound! A few major parts were replaced and the issue turned out to be that the left hand carburettor was unserviceable.

They tried everything to get it running properly and said that the main jet was so badly worn out that they couldn't lean it out enough to get a decent mixture on idle.
Compression was tested and 7 cyls came back with 120psi and the last one being 110psi. Cam lift was measured and came back fine. They then replaced the points, condenser, cap, plugs and leads.
Took the rocket covers off and found zero oil flow to the rocker assemblies, and the rocker arms had worn into the shafts so much that they were unable to slide along the shafts themselves. So a new assembly went on there as well.

A replacement pair of carbs off an RR with 30,000km on the clock were fitted, balanced and found to have completely fixed the problem.

They also found a vacuum leak in my diff-lock system which was preventing it from working so they disconnected it temporarily until I can afford to take it back or fix it myself.

So I am a happy chappy! The truck drives so well now, plenty of grunt and has got a lot better on fuel! I'm now doing 450kms to a tank of fuel so I'm rapt.

Once I got it home, I had a fiddle with the electrics to try and resurrect my dead oil pressure gauge, cold start and oil pressure lights.

The gauge sender was cooked, so I went down to the local motor factors and bought a cheap electrical gauge, used the sender and got a result! Now reading 30 ft/lb.

Cold start warning light is sporadic, I think the switch is past its best but it can make it go when I press the switch in myself so I think ill try and find a new one.

Still have no idea why my oil pressure light wont work. The bulb works and the wiring is in good nick as well. Can the pressure switch be known to go duff?

But all in all, very pleased!

The sender may need replacing or a bad earth.
