A few observations if mixing bits. The SD1 timing marks are in a different plan compared to a stage 1 or indeed a range rover, might save a few confused thoughts. Also for reference the high and low marks are in a different place on the dipstick...!

today also

removed left manifold (well the boy did) cleaned up the stage 1 damper assembly and water pump pulley that arrived this week and gave a coat of satin black.

Dipstick tube in and a few other bits. the hilarious bit was turning the engine by hand and seeing the red caps installed by Land rover that block the spark plug tubes for storage flying in all directions - didn't expect the seal to be that good - I guess that means there is some compression!

Is there anybody who can tell me where I can find (on the internet) composite gaskets for heads and inlet manifold?

Cheers

manifolds cleaned and studs replaced where needed, no more bits left on the old lump now to move over. Have just ordered a couple of missing bolts and new clutch kit, plate was quite worn and while the engine is out it seems mad not to replace.

More work

Chirstmas and work got in the way, but engine now built up with manifolds etc, ready to swing in tomorrow. Bad news was that I broke a fuel pipe on one of the carbs...

So looking at recon costs I've gone an ordered a new set!!

It's in, now for connecting it all up!

Took some hours to get the 'box and engine lined up, ended up removing the bumper as the crane was fouling it and couldn't get the last few cm onto the splines.

All in, watered and oiled. Oil primed, front panel back on, starter connected.

Spun the new engine on the started, oils lights on and off.

Scuppered yesterday by a water leak which took a while to find so didn't get a change to time up and see if it fired.

My dodgy repair to the old carb held fuel so will keep these on for starting up and swap as soon as everything is running.

Make sure you have a video running to grab the first start up :)

one of the exhaust manifold gaskets is on back to front so it sounds like a train. Just spend the last two hours trying to get the damned thing off again.

(it has started though!)

grrrr
