Engine Swap

Post by sebking »

Thought I'd do a new topic on this so we can follow the fun that is about to start.

The "new" engine is now on a crate in my garage and armed with the parts list I've been ordering a few things:

Water Pump
All the Water Pump bolts (recon unit comes without the pump and as I've currently got an SD1 lump I can't swap pumps), miscounted and now have a new order on the way.
Composite gasket
Outlet manifold bolts (and some studs)
New set of plugs (Britpart ones arrived so going to swap for NGK)

Questions: BP5ES or BP6ES plugs

Will the damper/pulley assembly from the SD1 lump fit the LR3.5 lump (does anyone have a spare Stage 1 one?, they are horribly expensive new, like about £500 all in)

Is the crank bolt the same?

Will strip grill and bonnet off this week and then the fun begins...

There aren't many SD1s with crank handle provision.

Seb,

I recently replaced my plugs with these – NGK BP5ET-10. They are VW spec but with triple earth electrodes. If you know anything about spark plugs you’ll know that the specs are otherwise exactly the same. It made a huge difference with regard to fowling plugs which was constantly happening with mine. Age, coke and lack of use I’m sure but since using these plugs I had no more problems and much better cold starting and general running as well.

I can’t comment too much on the ancillaries but according to my numbers my Stage1 is running an SD1 auto engine. This apparently was a brand NOS engine fitted in the mid eighties. As far as I can tell all my ancillaries are Stage1 to include the crank handle compatible pulley.

Good luck…

Crank

Post by sebking »

the damper is from an SD1 and therefore doesn't have the crank cog, less worried about this, more so on whether it will line up or not with the water pump.

Looks like you might need to get hold of a Range Rover (or Stage1) timing cover. The Land Rover water pump sits higher than on earlier V8’s. According to the picture on your website you can see that your water pump is much lower than it should be – the fan doesn’t sit nice against the radiator cowling. Beware though – you might also have the wrong oil pump drive dog as the later ones are a reverse polarity of the earlier ones.

pulleys

Post by sebking »

The new engine is a LR RR one. I've got the correct fan and coupling and the right new water pump. I've got the Stage one Pulleys and Damper arriving on Tuesday. Makes sense about the cowling now as it's seen some modifcation. The Alternator should now also sit in the right place.

Dizzy

Post by sebking »

The Dizzy I've got is a later post 76 and per the 1980's engine from both the LR and the SD1 with the correct slot and drive. Not sure what the Part number is though, will check that as the original Stage 1 dizzy is different being low a compression engine, the SD1 being high and the LR using 9:35:1.

Will try an pull the SD1 lump over the w/e and see what is what.

dizzy etc

Post by sebking »

looks like the Dizzy is for a RR of the right period so that's good.

Will need to check no if the dipstick is the same. Also can see why the fan was so close to the front chassis member now, the SD1 pump is so much lower. Will try an pull the lump today, bit worried about the manifold studs though.

it's out

Post by sebking »

it's out! Manifold studs in one piece too.

Some remedial action needed to various bits in the engine bay so will do that and an order placed for a few bits and bobs.

A good weekend, including a shiny new MOT on the Triumph Spitfire too.

Bits n Bobs

Post by sebking »

So far in for about £300 of sundries a few necessitated by the swap from SD1 to LR and to fix some previous bodges. Also a few bolts etc that were pretty manky and whilst they came out ok seems sensible at this stage to swap them for new.

Water Pump and Crank Damper Pulley's
Water pump bolts and washers
Manifold bolts
Oil Filter
Dipstick, tube and o ring
downpipe studs, washers and nuts
Engine Mounts
Spark Plugs
inline filter and pipes
Bell housing seal
some water pipes
Water Pump and gasket
Locking washers
Top gasket set (easier to buy a set rather than odds and ends) + composite inlet gasket
Rocker cover bolts
tube of sealant
Anti Freeze
Oil
Insulating tape
cable ties
