Carb restricters

Post by daidock »

Hi. I bought an '83 109 this week. Very nice ground up restoration 5 years ago including brand new engine and trans. I've looked through carbs and can't see what I've heard described as the restricters but did notice what appeared to be a pointed gasket edge protruding into the bore about 5mm all the way around. I'll be taking carbs off to make sure but in the meantime does anyone know what this pointed edge is? Surely it must muck up the airflow? It's manifold side of carb of course. I'm only checking this out as I am a little surprised at the lack of power. Engine appears healthy but I haven't done comp check yet. Gulp! Any info would be appreciated.

If the engine is replaced its unlikely someone would have refitted the restrictors
Those spikey things are meant to be there to cause a turbulent air flow ...why they do that #i don't know, but take them out and it runs horribly, so best leave them there

Things to check
Ignition timing (and dwell angle- V8's are very sensitive to it)
Carb tuning
Air filter
Plugs/Leads
then start looking for more expensive things

Also fuel filters might need cleaning.

But what he said :)

Also worth checking the throttle link between the carbs, they are only plastic socket ends, discovered this on mine while the air filter assembly was off. Pulls a lot better now and sounds the part.

Have you driven any other standard vehicles to compare with what you consider low power?

If you can see serrated teeth pointing inwards from all directions, it's not a gasket. It is a plate to do with air-flow. It's not Land-Rover it's Range-Rover. If the car is "restored", I assume you have some evidence as to what "new" engine was fitted and whether this was a complete power unit or just a new engine with used ancillaries.

Thanks for everyones help. Have just had a mad moment and posted a thread on the same topic! I'll go and have a lie down! Apologies! I haven't driven another one so it may indeed be all OK. I'll check timing etc at the weekend just to make sure. Landy was completely rebuilt around 6 years ago from the ground up. New engine and trans from Rover. Sorry for the mix up again. Doh!

does anybody have a picture of these restrictors? l have removed the spikey plate gasket believing these were the restrctors, the engine has never run well enough to notice the difference

l am having to change the engine as the bearings are failing - when the new engine is fitted will make sure they are in there
thanks

Read your parts book and read this posting again. You have just removed something that's there to improve performance.

As per the parts book the restrictors are almost 1" deep and secured by a wire snap ring.
