Serial numbers

Can anyone tell me where to look for the engine and gearbox serial numbers?

engine number should be on the cyl head to block joint face, on the LH bank near to the dipstick
transmission nuber is on the rear face of the transfer case, just above the bottom cover plate by the handbrake drum

the manual provides illustrations of the locations if you need them (somewhere in the first few pages)

It is possible to read the number off the gearbox with it in and all the bodywork in place?

Read your owner's handbook. The gearbox number is just below the fill/check point.

Unfortunately that is something lost to the passage of time, just needed a rough idea of where i should be looking.
