Some very early 110's were selectable front wheel drive. A customer of ours used to have one, a HiCap if I recall. Not sure what the thinking was behind it - maybe a cancelled order?

It was weird seeing an all new 110 with 'permanent four wheel drive' but with free wheel hubs.

I had assumed something like that but the listing clearly states Defender, which is another ten years down the track.

The hubs are also five bolt mounting.

These only ever intended for Series vehicles and not later permanent 4WD versions. The ad is wrong.

In some parts they were fairly common and some farmers seemed to think they were a good idea. The fact that series vehicles are generally 2WD until the 4WD option is locked in, or low range is selected in which it is 4WD, negates any practical need for these except for those rare occurences when you might be driving in low range on a hard surface, say if you were pulling a very heavy trailer on the road in low range.

They were not made for Defenders AFAIK and the vehicle length is not relevant. They are generally only fitted to the front hubs.

Some nice examples here:

The examples in the link are six bolt. The e-bay items are five, hence the oddity. Plus that the first Series III replacement model was named and badged 110 (or 90). The Defender title didn't occur for almost another ten years.

RTC 8063 = Free Wheel Hubs for 110 with selectable 2 and 4 wheel drive.

Page 268 of parts catalogue. Page I9 of microfiche.

Transfer box was modified and any subsequent replacement was to fit the full time t/box.

I should think a 2/4WD 110 is now a collectors item....probably rarer than a Stage 1.
