The check is extensive and is constantly changing, depending upon which aparatchiki are in power at the time (and how ridiculous the requirements become). Here is a basic checklist though:

There are updates about every quarter.
Essentially anything that is built onto the car at manufacture must work satisfactorily. If you make substantial changes to the vehicle after it is built then these changes need to be certified and and approved and an additional plaque is fixed to the firewall. From then on they get included in WOF checks as though they were there when it as built.
How and what are checked involves quite a lot of detail, of course.
