chassis number plate

hey all-

i have a question for anyone in the UK. Can anyone think of why my chassis number would be hashed through? It looks like it was done quite deliberately, but it did not at all make the number hard to read. About the same size as the numbers and stamped right over it, is this pattern:

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

could this have anything to do with an MoD history or something?

This is the best I can come up wiuth for now. You can see how it is a partial plate. Where the number goes in the bottom space is where the pattern is stamped on top of the number.
