New to forum, Looking for some advice!

Post by simon »

hello I have a 1982 stage 1 V8 county sw. I use it mainly for off road fun but I try not to damage it ,as I know they are rare now. Its nice to find people that no what a stage 1 is. I hope you can help me with a few questions i have ,one for starters ignition timing for use with unleaded fuel ,is it 9 deg tds at 1400 rpm witha points gap of 0.4 mm. I found this on line is it right. I would be grateful for anyone that can offer some advice on this point

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forums.

I must admit I've never timed up my Stage 1 engine but if it helps the book figures are:

Contact breaker gap 0.35mm to 0.4mm

Dwell angle 26deg to 28deg at 550 to 650 rev/min

Ignition timing, dynamic: models with emission control 1deg BTDC mark on crankshaft pulley - using 91 to 93 octane fuel - 2 star rating in UK

Ignition timing, dynamic: non-emission engines 6deg BTDC at 650 rev/min maximum

Ignition timing, static: all models TDC

Normal unleaded in UK is 95 octane so you'd probably get away with slightly more advance.

advance is before (piston) Top Dead Center
retard is after TDC
Dwell angle is the degrees of rotation whilst the points are closed.

Set it up in the order the book says. Otherwise like me you wonder why it runs like a pig. I set the dwell at the wrong stage (not concentrating). When timed with a strobe it ran but would not rev. oops sorted now. Another lesson the hard way.
