Overdrive

Post by Ginga »

I am trying to get hold of a clutch sleeve for a Stage 1 V8 fairey overdrive. The Fairey Part No is 5114-A2. It is designed to come off the LT 95 gearbox main shaft.

The shift linkage would be useful as well

Was it you that left a message for me about this last week? If so, I tried ringing you back a couple of times but your mobile was switched off. I might be able to help with the clutch sleeve (I think I have a spare one, will have to check) but not the linkage. You'll probably have to make that yourself.

Any of you guy's out there have an overdrive fitted?

Is it as noisy as the 4cyl one's ie the constant whining when it's engaged.

I have one sitting under my desk wondering whether to bother or not.

Ideally I want a 3.9 with High ratio box but wifey says "No"

Did that and ended up with two kids and a mortgage.

Plus she has a nice economical disco and cannot understand 20mpg or my addiction to java green.

I have one fitted. Does whine a bit, but is worth it anytime especially on a trip.Mine may have a lower ratio box than the CSWs as i need the OD to cruise at 75. It works out to about 18 to the gall then.

I have an overdrive on my 88 and wil hopefully fit one to my stage 1 when I get it on the road. The one on my 88 used to whine a lot but its a lot quieter now due to a) better sound proofing ;-) and b) using fancy gear oil from difflock.com has seemed to have an effect on it.

If its off of a series 3 it will not fit (unless it currently uses a LT95 box). Even if the gearbox housing bolt points are the same, the mainshafts spline on a Stage 1 gear box has 8 splines and needs a clutch sleeve Fairey Part No 5114-A2. I suspect your 88 usese an RTC7170 clutch sleeve which is a 10 spline mainshaft interface.

The eternal dimensions (The bit that mates with the overdrive) are however identical

I am currently enquiring with gear manufactures to have a cluth sleeve made using an RTC7170 (which ive bought new) as the external pattern and a LT95 Trunion gear (the gear you take off to fit an overdrive) as the internal pattern. The only trouble I can forsee is if the orientation of the internal and external gear refernces (imagine a sort of TDC sort of thing)are important. (they dont appear to be though as the overdrive engages and disegages at differant rotations).

If anyone has a clutch sleeve i need one. 8 spline Fairey Part No 5114-A2. A broken one would be useful as well to study as a pattern for the gear company

Yep that was my plan. Make sure you get the clutch sleeve and the roller bearing!

If the cost of getting a clutch sleeve made is to much ill have to buy another overdrive.
