Standard fitment was Michelin 750x16 XS tyres.

Shame they are not not available anymore.

Just got some genuine MOD surplus new & nearly new tyres onto my stage 1. The run well and grip in the mud but do not whine too much on the road, sounds like a proper Land Rover too.

I believe that Goodyear still make them as the Custom Hi Miler Xtra Grip according to their site but do not seem to sell in the UK, sure ther would be a market as they are what was normal fit for military series wagons.

Did have the chinese copies of this tyre on but they wore very quickly towing so replaced with real ones!

Can you find a link for these?

From what I found they seem to be replaced by Wrangler Duratrac but the nearest fit for the Stage 1 would be LT235/85R16.

Since the rim is only 5.5" I am not keen on having tyres that are too wide on my truck.

The link that I found.

http://www.goodyear.com.my/Custom.html

not sure why they dont seem to at least advertise or sell them in UK, they work well and look right on a Series wagon so there would be a reasonable market for them.

A bit of hum on the road, sounds like a proper landrover! not too noisy and good enough road manners with very good grip off road, ahve happily pulled a loaded heavy horse trailer out of the mud when it's wet with no problems.

Anyone got any ideas? or is it just that the current fashion makes them obsolete because they are an old design?

You can still get Avon Rangemaster in the 7.50 x 16 size for £90.00 a corner fitted and balanced. You will need tubes though if you don't have them already. I run these tyres on the front and they are very quite compared to the Deerstones on the back. Remarkably the Deerstones grip much better in rough weather.

Unless you're really trying to keep the period look I'd steer clear of the goodyears and avon rangemasters etc, they're all pretty crap really. Many years ago I had a pull off with my 109 vs an 88 diesel and I had new goodyear hi milers ( the old army ones) and the 88 with fresh trac edges pulled me away on damp grass. Even if I gave him a chance he could stop me. I used firestone SAT's after that then got 900x16 Petlas tyres on 7x16 offset rims which are the best cross ply all rounder I've ever owned. I'm replacing these with 35"Simex next.
The best current tyre for the landrover on standard rims is the michelin XZL. I say this after pissing around with all kinds of tyres in all kinds of terrain in Angola as a fleet manager of many and various things including 85 110's. Next best all rounder on aftermarket rims is the BFG M/T or A/T which do everything really well.

XPC 7.50x16

Look right and handle well.

Cheap if you get "take offs"

xpc's look virtualy the same as the goodyears ive got
XZL would look completely wrong to me

Probably sell the goodyers and go with range masters, never had a problem with them and they look right
