Snow

Post by Mrs Bingham »

We’ve had snow since Thursday night and although most of the snow has now gone ours and the surrounding roads are still 3” thick with solid ice so the Stage 1 has been our only usable means of transport. She has performed brilliantly and has not slid or got stuck once – great fun. The only downside is due to the extreme cold and I have struggled to get a smooth tickover and have had a bit of a flat spot at low revs. To compensate I’ve needed a tiny bit of choke to overcome the flatspot. One of my carbs can’t be adjusted which is due to a worn jet I suspect – I should have fixed this in the summer! Take that in to account together with low speeds and traffic congestion and I’m only managing to get 6.5 mpg. So far I’ve spent £90.00 on fuel since last weekend, but what fun….

No improvement on the ice but also lethal black ice this morning. I went sideways coming off a roundabout on a clear main road!!! Yes a very sphincter twitching moment…

Mpg is improving though – just shy of 10 mpg now. I’ve given up with the other cars so I have fuelled the Stage 1 up for duration of Christmas. Hopefully the fuel won’t run out until after Boxing Day…

I'm not getting any mpg out of mine because it's still in pieces all over the place and not any chance of being together any time soon to play in the snow
So don't grudge the fuel and enjoy! I'm jealous!!

I've posted some piccies of mine in the photos section. Think I managed about 7.5 mpg. Everywhere had no LPG so I brimed my fuel tank expecting to run out of gas. Sure enough this happened and about 6 miles down the road the fuel line split spraying petrol everywhere and getting me a ride on a breakdown truck. Still, it worked beautifully till that point.

Been using my truck a lot today.

First job was towing a stuck taxi driver in BMW X5 up our hill. Needed the chains (which were a pain to fit on a hill in snow!)on all 4 wheels though to pull him out as he had already spun most of the road to ice! Think he was puzzled that when on '4 wheel drive' his BMW would not just drive up the hill!

Left the chains on after that to go shopping in town. Had of course to drive in the snow all the way but luckily enough most of the roads had a good inch or so even when compressed.

Found my locking catches on the outside chain tend to pull open, so have now cable tied them shut. They're the old ladder type chains with a catch that folds back over itself pulling the chain tighter.

Just hope that there is still enough snow tomorrow for them, did pass a snowplough the was also spraying out the chassis rusting salt as well, hope they don't get too far! Had to come back from town by the back roads as plenty of the white stuff on them.

Bearly 2” inches of snow here – just lethal ice everywhere. I’m currently taking a “crash” course in ice skating whilst driving a Land Rover. I definitely need new trousers now. Well done to the council for doing too little too late again!!!! Sliding aside, the Stage 1 definitely does what it says on the tin. Brilliant piece of kit and even the heater is acceptable.
