Stage 1 fire engines!

Post by sebking »

I've been sent pictures from Portugal of Stage 1's converted by Carmichael in the UK and used but the Portuguese fire service.

Any one know any more - I'm trying to get the sender to get signed up here!

Hi Sebastian,

here I am, as you asked me to

In Portugal the majority of the Stage ones came to fire service and they were prepared by carmichael.

Here it is my stage one ex-fire service.

It's a 109 truckcab, from 1981 with only 34.000kms on the clock. It's common to find Stage ones with 20/30.000kms or even 10.000kms, because they were used only in the summer to fight the fire and transport water to difficult places and the beside the summer they stayed in the garage. When they bought new cars, and more economical ones, they only use the "guzzling" stage ones when they needed all the cars...

Here it is:

What do you think about this stage one? What are the differences that you recongnise as been done by Carmichel?

Thanks,

Pedro

Very nice. What a difference a decent climate makes – your chassis looks like new and your springs don’t have any rust on them.
If I were to spot the difference then the wheels look like one ton spec with longer spring hangers. The pipe coming up from the exhaust manifold used for heating the air intake is a different design. What is the strange contraption attached to the top radiator hose? The radiator expansion tank is in a different location and it doesn’t look like the heater is present – not that you would need it in Portugal, but having said that it doesn’t do much in the UK either! Interestingly you have no oil pressure gauge.

I like it a lot so look after it….

most i can see have bene covered
Longer spring shackles...not landrover ones though ....
does it have extended spring monts at the front of the springs?
Wheels lok to be the 6" wide Forward control/1 Ton ones
Something odd with the top hose...heat exchanger for something maybe? ...any other connections to it
Intake system seems to be a stage 1 normal item to me
the frame at the back of the cab looks like the remains of a ladder rack

yeah i would say longer spring hangers. love to know what that extra box is on the top radiator hose?? how do you find your tires?? they look like Simex or Silverstone's?? very good looking truck and your lucky to find one with such low km's.

I would guess its an electric water heater, pretty much a standard fitment to fire engines and ambulances so they are never cold started.

Very cool. That pump gear looks like it'd be worth as much as the truck on its own.
