fitting aftermarket electronic ignition

Post by onno wielinga »

I have had for a few good years a lumenition optronic electronic ignition unit, which i am very satisfied with. unlucky enough i have broken it as it could not handle a high output coil, which i fitted last year (resistance less than 3 ohm which the unit cannot handle).
I could go for the high performance unit from lumenition (quite expensive)
or get a standard coil and repair the unit or go for a pertronix unit (works with magnets) which seems to work very well with a high output coil.

anybody with experience with the pertronix unit (american, built over 30 years)?

I'm also considering the same conversion. Any info would be much appreciated. I'm most interested in knowing if converting back to breaker points is easy enough in the case that the electronic stuff craps out.
Q: Where's the cresent? A: It's on the big shelf

I have never tried any of them - but a lot of folks over here with the 4cyl Series swear by the Petronix.

I fitted an electronic dizzy from a later model range rover to mine and then replaced the ignition amplifier on the side with a higher powered one. Ran like a dream.

I will see if I can dig some details out.
