So today the focus was on the heads. First I needed to pull the valves out of the heads so they could be cleaned. I wasn't able to find a valve spring compressor in the workshop, I ended up needing to make a tool which would allow me to compress the springs and pull out the collets (if that is what ...

Dear stirlsilver, when you are finished, can you take some photo to the diff lock pipes from the engine to the gearBox and the swich please? Sure, but it will be a little while before I get to that point... I haven't started putting the engine back together yet. Not a real exciting update, I tapped...

Well, some progress today. The bores of the engine were de glazed using a dunny brush hone. Obviously being done by hand the honing isn't perfect but it would be a hell of a lot better than the mirrors that they were originally (i'm going to have to make sure to run in the engine properly this time)...

Ok a bit of an update, I got a bit slack there but progress is moving along slowly. Engine has been completely stripped down, on pulling the pistons out I found two with broken rings, cylinder 1 and 3, top ring. Not sure how long they would have been broken for... because on the 8th of June I had th...

Stirling, out of interest I was wondering how much you are paying for your clutch, and what are you getting. I've got my motor at the machinists at the moment for a rebore, crank grind and balance, and although my clutch seemed fine, while it's out I am going to fit new stuff. However, the cheapest...

Cool. B) Why would it howl with the gear turned the other way? I am paranoid and impatient. I would stick the gear lever on now and turn it over to make sure everything goes in and out at the right point and to make sure nothing falls in during reassembly. I believe it will howl, because the gear w...

Ok, so another busy weekend. And getting real close to the finish line now. First of all, I need to make a correction, there is a photo showing the low range gear on the intermediate shaft the wrong way around... I noticed it the other day and fixed it up... that would have been a bit of a problem h...

So in my time of need, Wayne comes to the rescue. I would like to introduce you to gearbox number 3! Out of a car that was crashed with about 100,000km on the clock. And it's been sitting ever since. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a16/stirlsilver/Gearbox%20Rebuild/DSCF1865.jpg The transfer case wa...

When we fitted the .996 high range gears the shims were fine, definitely not black as they are now and I have never let the transfer case run out of oil. However, it is possible that I may have been driving the car for a while with the whopping big hole in the side of the transfer case which could h...

Well, I was all set to get this gearbox finished today. I had gone and bought a new shaft, phosphor bronze shims and a roller bearing. Everything to get the job done. I had gone about washing all the components and preparing to install the intermediate shaft... Anyway on reinspecting the low range g...

Stirling, I've seen in your videos how you drive. That is extreme and outside normal range :p I think i've found proof of that... judging by the condition of the shim next to the low range gear!!! http://stage1v8.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=7134#7134 I think i'm going to avoid EPX oils, I don't t...

Well, today I took a close look at the intermediate shaft and the associated components from both gearboxes to see what was in good condition and what wasn't. Basically the shaft, gears and bearings from gearbox 1 are no good, all have witness marks/wear marks all over the place. Pretty shocking sta...

120 degrees when towing a trailer up a hill? Roughly what speed and what temperature was the air (obviously the faster you go the more air flows under the car which cools the transmission). I think you might find that the worst case scenario would be when you are in low range with the gearbox in 1st...
