Cheers Jonnyboy, I thought that this was going to be a very lonely thread! :) Mine hasn't got the bumper top recovery points. I was told years ago that these weren't strong enough for recovery though and should only be used for tie down. I do like the spring haner idea, though I'd pretty much decide...

I had a brake fluid leak that I couldn't locate, then noticed that the carpet was wet. Leak had come down the pedal into the cab and couldn't be seen from the engine bay.

JATE/Recovery rings - Where to fit?

While I'm sorting out all the issues with the Chassis, it occurred to me that this was the ideal time to fit JATE rings or similar. Before I go and spend the money, I have a couple of questions that hopefully some of you will know about: a) JATE rings seem the best option, but are the swivel recover...

Not an expert, but someone may come along who is. Might be teaching granny to suck eggs (apologies if you've already looked at these). I'd check that (in no particular order/priority): The idle speed is set correctly first (see Landrover manuals V8 Supplement for set up procedure). When the choke is...

If everything isn't too worn, you can run with the cover off with no problems. The amount of oil coming through drains away faster than it can come out. It's only when you have loads of wear and therefore more clearance around the rocker bore/rocker shaft that oil oozes out at a terrific rate and do...

Jambo does make a good point. The rocker shafts are handed and have to be fitted the correct way round. If you've assembled correctly then that won't be the problem though. The easiest way to tell is to start up with the rocker cover off. If oil is coming through, you'll see it. If the rocker shaft ...

Similar happened to me years ago except all the rods were bent and two rockers had fractured and come away from the rocker shaft (with an expensive clang against the rocker cover! :( ) I phoned a V8 specialist (to order the new bits) who advised me to drain the lifters as they were possibly pumped u...

Further to Stirlsilvers post, is the oil pressure gauge one of the ones that operate on a capiliary pipe from the oil pump area. If so, it could well be that the pipe is gunged up and therefore there is no or little reading on the dial. Is the green oil pressure light going completely out and stayin...

If it's really in that good condition, regardless of it's history, I'd consider it. You could easily spend a couple of grand getting a cheaper one up to scratch (or even keeping it roadworthy). How good is the engine though. Mine has similar mileage and is/has been in a real state. Check it out thor...

Don't know if this helps, but the oil pressure relief spring on mine got jammed and showed similar symptoms. Its located on the oil pressure sender/pump body (just above the axle) and consists of a spring and piston. At first I took it apart and cleaned it up and it worked for a bit then jammed agai...

I've been looking for some 9 fingered gloves for the dizzy. No-one seems to have them! :D :D Older VW's had an elasticated plastic bag arrangment over the dizzy and leads, but they were for 4 pots. Never seen one for a V8. With regards to the fan, a few people have suggested taking it off and replac...

You could try one of these or similar: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=217508&doy=15m2 I'm sure that truck equipment suppliers will sell this type of kit if you can't get it from Maplin. I know that the 101 FC (Similar V8 and 24v system) used to have a water proof plug a...

Safari roof

Little question for anyone with a Safari roof to satisfy some (very) idle curiosity. Mine has circular holes cut into it in pairs at points around the upper edge. They're between ~20 and 30mm and look like they were there from new. Are these standard? If so, what are they for? It looks like they are...

I think I'd better decide whether I'm patching the old chassis or replacing it with a new one soon.

Does anyone know if Designa Chassis still do a Stage 1 chassis?
