This link may help to explain how your engine is possibly glazed now and how it should have been run in. http://www.ntnoa.org/enginebreakin.htm It is entirely possible that your cylinders have been glazed. Whether you choose to do anything about it is up to you. As you said, it is an old engine and ...

Hmmm, classic mineral oils are more viscous than many newer synthetic oils only until the oil heats up, then they are thin. Newer oils start off thin and stay at the same viscosity over a much wider range of temperatures, which means your engine is less likely to fry at very high temperatures becaus...

Agreed. The advice I have received most often is to use mineral oils and use the grade specified for the engine, as opposed to synthetic. I change every 5000k's, filter at 10000k's. So what you are saying is that you have no seals around the valve stems? Possibly this is why oil is getting into the ...

Just amazing what a few relatively cheap fixes can do isn't it :) It isn't always necessary to chuck great gobs of cash at these things.

Well done Ollie.

Small banshee when oil just changed, medium banshee is acceptable and is most of the time, big angry banshee suggests something is not right. Umm?? What the? lol Just read Sebs post ;) A banshee is an Irish fairy of the female form. Noted for their loud sustained screaming, something like a short t...

On the other thread you said you did a tip run. If you were carrying dough maybe that's the problem :p Is the smell coming from the gearbox or somewhere else on the vehicle. I often get strange smells coming through when driving over country roads, especially during milking time. :D The smells usual...

Tough call. There are many reasons for why you may have fouled plugs. How bad is bad? Are the plugs really fouled up or just a little blackish? I am not at all certain why your engine needed rebuilding after so few miles (I assume you are in the states??), but some causes may be: - hotter plugs requ...

Dani, If it is only the first gear that is causing problems then the problem has nothing to do with oil, or no oil, in the gearbox. However it may be a clutch problem that means you can't move it out of gear and the description you gave of fluid dripping on the clutch peddle suggests that might be t...

For normal road running, they're fine. If you are going into rough or steep territory then you may have problems with fuel spilling out of the float chamber. Quite a few people around here used to replace the Strombergs with SU's because they thought the SU were better. Since then other better optio...

I got my carbs rebuilt after 24 years and 220000 ks. Removed the restrictors and had them properly tuned. Extremely good value for money and fuel economy is just great. Just about time for the annual tune up :)

Dani,

Can you still close the bonnet with that monster sticking out the top?

No wonder your brother said he did 140km/hr. The most I have done with mine is 120 but I was too nervous to go faster.
